What it asks for

The formula

1. Start from taxable income (gross income minus whatever deductions and exemptions you are entitled to)
2. Split it across the slabs and tax each band at its own rate
3. Add the slab amounts to get the base tax
4. Apply rebate if eligible, then add cess (and surcharge, for very high incomes)

Worked example

Band by band:

First ₹3,00,000 → nil → ₹0
Next ₹4,00,000 (₹3L to ₹7L) at 5% → 400 000 × 0.05 = ₹20,000
Next ₹2,00,000 (₹7L to ₹9L) at 10% → 200 000 × 0.10 = ₹20,000

Base tax = 0 + 20 000 + 20 000 = ₹40,000
Cess at 4% = 40 000 × 0.04 = ₹1,600
Total tax = ₹41,600

Effective rate = 41 600 ÷ 900 000 × 100 = 4.62%, not 10%. The 10% is the marginal rate — the rate on the next rupee earned.
