Result = value × (factor of the unit you convert from) ÷ (factor of the unit you convert to), every factor being the size of the unit in g: 1 kg = 1000 g 1 mg = 0.001 g 1 lb = 453.592 g 1 oz = 28.3495 g 1 amu = 1.66054 × 10-24 g
Worked example
1 lb = 1 × 453.592 ÷ 1 = 453.592 g.
Quick reference
1 g = 0.001 kg = 1000 mg = 0.0022 lb = 0.03527 oz = 6.022137 × 1023 amu
1 lb = 453.592 g = 0.45359 kg = 453592 mg = 16 oz = 2.731593 × 1026 amu
Second worked example
250 g = 250 × 1 ÷ 28.3495 = 8.8185 oz.
Common values
Worked out with the same factors the converter uses.
1 lb = 0.453592 kg = 16 oz
2 lb = 0.907184 kg = 32 oz
5 lb = 2.26796 kg = 80 oz
10 lb = 4.53592 kg = 160 oz
50 lb = 22.6796 kg = 800 oz
Common mistakes
Assuming 10 ounces to the pound. With the app’s factors, 453.592 ÷ 28.3495 = 16 ounces to the pound.
Taking a kilogram as roughly 2 pounds. It is 1000 ÷ 453.592 = 2.20462 lb, so 50 kg is 110.2 lb, not 100 lb.
Mixing up amu and grams. 1 amu = 1.66054 × 10−24 g is the scale for single atoms: one carbon-12 atom is 12 amu = 1.99 × 10−23 g, while 12 g is the mass of a whole mole of them.
