Alternate Routes After an Unsuccessful Attempt — A Chemistry Decision Map
The result is out and your roll number is not in the list. The first week after that is about feeling; this article is about the week after that, when the real question is no longer "why did this happen" but "what are my actual options, and by when must I choose".
Most students answer that question badly — not because they lack options, but because they can only see one. They repeat the same attempt in the same way for a third and fourth cycle, because nobody ever showed them the map. This article is the map. It names no cut-offs, no attempt limits, no age limits and no fellowship amounts, because every one of those is set by the current official notification of the specific exam and changes between cycles — read the notification itself, on the examining body's own website, before you plan around any of them.
The rule that matters more than any single route
A second attempt taken deliberately, with a diagnosis and a changed method, is one of the strongest things you can do. A second attempt taken because you never made a decision is the beginning of a lost three years. The difference between them is not the exam. It is whether you wrote down, in advance, what you would do if it did not work again.
Step one — diagnose before you decide anything
Spend one honest evening on this, on paper. Every route below depends on the answer.
1. Get your actual score and section breakdown from the official scorecard, not from memory or from a coaching prediction.
2. Classify the gap. Was it knowledge (whole units you had not covered), accuracy (you knew it and got it wrong), speed (you knew it and never reached it), or strategy (wrong attempt order, too many guesses)? These four failures need completely different fixes, and treating a speed problem with more revision is why people repeat the same result.
3. Count your real preparation hours, not the hours you sat with a book open. If the honest number was small, the exam did not defeat you — the schedule did, and that is fixable.
4. Ask what changed since last time. If your answer to "what will I do differently" is only "study harder", you do not yet have a plan.

The route students overlook most: a project position
Individual researchers advertise junior research and project positions funded from a specific grant, on their own institute's website or notice board. They are rarely collected in one place, which is exactly why they are less crowded than the national exams.
For someone who has just missed a fellowship, this route is unusually good value: you get into a lab, you learn techniques, you find out whether you actually enjoy research before committing years to it, and you sit the next attempt with real experience behind you — which also makes your interview far stronger. Before accepting, ask how long the grant runs and whether registering for a PhD alongside is permitted at that institute.
The parallel-track principle
The most common structural mistake is running one track at a time: prepare for a year, fail, then start looking at jobs from zero. Run two tracks instead.

Track A — the exam. A fixed, protected block of study each day, built around your diagnosis rather than around re-reading everything. Full-length timed papers from the start, not saved for the last month.
Track B — the fallback. Two hours a week, every week, without fail: keep the CV current, apply to advertised project positions and institute entrances as they appear, email supervisors whose work you have actually read, and add one concrete skill.
The decision date. Write it down now — the date of the next result. On that date, if Track A has not worked, Track B is not a defeat; it is the plan you already chose, calmly, before you were upset.
How to judge whether a reattempt is the right call
A reattempt is a good decision when three things are true together: you can name the specific gap, you can name a specific change in method, and you can afford the cycle financially and personally. If you can name the gap but cannot change how you study, more time will not help. If you cannot name the gap at all, the honest first step is a diagnostic full-length paper under real timing, not another purchase of study material.
Be equally honest in the other direction. Deciding to stop after one or two attempts is not weakness, and the "wasted" preparation is not wasted: the subject depth you built is exactly what an industry interview panel or a research supervisor tests you on.
Mistakes that turn one failed cycle into three
- Restarting from the first chapter. You do not need the whole syllabus again. You need the units the scorecard says you lost marks in.
- Not taking timed full papers until the last month, when speed was the problem all along.
- Cutting off contact with the department. The people who tell you about project positions are the people you stop meeting.
- Applying nowhere while preparing. Admission calendars do not wait for your result; a whole cycle can pass while you wait.
- Choosing a route from social media claims. Success stories are selected, and figures quoted in advertisements are not verified. Read official notifications and employer postings for anything that matters.
- Hiding the result from family and then deciding under pressure in a single argument. Have the conversation early, with your options written down.
- Treating an unrelated qualification as a plan. Adding a certificate that opens no specific door is motion, not progress.
- Ignoring health and sleep in the reattempt year. The second cycle fails far more often from burnout than from syllabus.
What to do in the first fortnight
- Download the official scorecard and read the section breakdown.
- Write the four-way diagnosis: knowledge, accuracy, speed or strategy.
- Read the current notification of every exam you are considering, and the admission pages of five institutes you would genuinely go to.
- Update your CV — project, techniques, instruments, any teaching or internship.
- Talk to two people: your project supervisor, and one person a year or two ahead of you who took a different route.
- Write down your decision date, and what you will do on it if the answer is no again.
The long view
A qualifying exam decides which door opens this year. It does not decide whether you can do chemistry, and within five years almost nobody in a lab or a company knows or cares how many attempts a colleague took. What people notice is whether you kept building — a technique, a project, a skill, a paper — during the year when the result did not go your way.
