Building a CV as a Chemistry Postgraduate — What to Put In and What to Cut
A chemistry CV is read for about thirty seconds the first time. In those thirty seconds a supervisor or a hiring manager is looking for three things: what you are qualified in, what you can actually do with your hands, and whether your project is close to what they need. Most student CVs bury all three under a list of school marks and a paragraph of adjectives.
This article shows what a chemistry postgraduate's CV should contain, how to describe techniques and a dissertation so that they carry weight, and the claims that get candidates caught in interview. Conventions differ between an academic application, an Indian company and an overseas university, so treat this as the structure and always follow the specific instructions in the advertisement you are answering.
What a CV has to prove
Everything else — formatting, length, fonts — is secondary to those three. If a reader finishes your CV without knowing which instruments you have personally run and what your dissertation actually found, the CV has failed regardless of how neat it looks.
CV, resume and biodata — not the same document
In academic and research applications a CV is expected: complete, with education, research experience, publications, presentations, teaching and referees, and it is allowed to run to two pages or more as your record grows. For industry, especially at entry level, a shorter resume of one to two pages, tailored to the role, is usually right. The old-style Indian biodata that opens with father's name, date of birth and marital status is not what a research group or a modern company wants; include personal details only where the employer's own form asks for them.
The section order that works

The technical skills section — where honesty pays
This is the section that gets probed in interview, so grade yourself and say so. Three honest levels are enough: operated independently, operated under supervision, and sample preparation and interpretation only. A candidate who writes "NMR — prepared samples and interpreted ¹H and ¹³C spectra; instrument operated by facility staff" is trusted immediately. A candidate who writes "expert in NMR" and cannot explain what shimming is has damaged the whole CV, because the reader now doubts every other line.
Group the skills so they can be scanned: separation and chromatography; spectroscopy; synthesis and purification; electrochemical and thermal methods; and software and data skills. Name the software you genuinely use for plotting, spectra processing or structure drawing, and any programming you can actually do.
Describing your dissertation so it counts
The four-line formula: problem → what you did → what you found → what it demonstrates.
Weak version — the one most students submit:
"Project on synthesis and characterisation of metal complexes under the guidance of my supervisor. Learned various techniques."
Strong version — same project, written as evidence:
- Synthesised a series of transition-metal complexes with substituted ligands and purified them by recrystallisation and column chromatography.
- Characterised all compounds by ¹H NMR, FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy; interpreted the spectra independently.
- Followed the ligand-substitution kinetics by UV-visible spectroscopy and determined the rate constant from the absorbance-time data.
- Wrote the full dissertation, including the experimental section, and presented the work at the departmental seminar.
The second version is not longer by much, and it tells the reader what you can do, what you decided yourself, and what you can be asked about. Every verb is something you personally did.
Three more before-and-after rewrites.
Before: "Good knowledge of HPLC."
After: "HPLC — ran isocratic and gradient separations independently on a
UV-detector system; prepared mobile phases and standard solutions; plotted calibration
curves and calculated sample concentrations by linear regression."
Before: "Hard-working, dedicated, quick learner, team player."
After: Delete it. Adjectives about yourself carry no weight; the projects
section is where those qualities are demonstrated.
Before: "Paper communicated to a journal."
After: State the true status plainly — "manuscript in preparation" or
"manuscript submitted", with the authors as they will appear. Never list a submitted
manuscript in a way that reads as published.
Tailoring — one CV per kind of role, not one CV for everything
Keep one long master document containing everything you have ever done, and cut a targeted version from it for each application. For a synthesis-focused position, the synthesis and purification lines move up. For an analytical role, chromatography, validation, calibration and data handling lead. For a PhD application, the research project, publications and presentations dominate and the referees matter.
Mirror the vocabulary of the advertisement where it is genuinely true of you. If the posting asks for method validation and you did method validation, use those words — shortlisting is often done by searching for exactly them.
Formatting rules that actually matter
- Send a PDF unless another format is requested, and name the file with your own name and the role, not "CV final 3".
- One readable font, consistent headings, generous white space. Decoration is not rewarded in science.
- Reverse chronological order within every section.
- Consistent date format throughout, and no unexplained gaps in the timeline.
- Avoid tables, columns, text boxes and images in a CV that may be read by an automated system — plain structured text survives everywhere.
- Number the pages and put your name in the header if it runs to more than one page.
- Proofread for chemistry as well as English: a wrong formula or a misspelled reagent on a chemistry CV is noticed instantly.
Referees — ask first, then prepare them
Never list someone as a referee without asking. Ask in person if you can, at least two weeks before the deadline, and give each referee your CV, your project summary and the specific role, so their letter can be concrete instead of generic. Use institutional email addresses, spell designations correctly, and tell your referees when the application has gone in and what the outcome was — that courtesy is remembered the next time you need one.
Mistakes that cost shortlists
- Overstating a technique. The fastest way to lose an interview panel is a skills line you cannot defend in two questions.
- Half a page of Class 10 and 12 details in a postgraduate CV. One line each is enough.
- Adjective paragraphs instead of evidence.
- A vague project title with no findings. The reader cannot tell whether you did anything.
- Listing an unsubmitted manuscript as a publication, or listing a certificate course as a qualification. Both are checked.
- An unprofessional email address, or a phone number with no voicemail.
- The same CV sent to a synthesis group and an analytical laboratory. Both readers notice.
- Typos in chemical names and formulae. On a chemistry CV they read as carelessness in the lab.
- Listing referees you have not asked — a surprised referee gives a lukewarm reference.
- Never updating it. Add each new technique, seminar and result the week it happens, not the night before a deadline.
Build it as you go
The best CVs are not written; they are accumulated. Keep a running file from your first postgraduate term, and add a line every time you learn an instrument, finish a characterisation, present in a group meeting, tutor a junior or complete a training module. When an opportunity appears with a ten-day deadline — and they usually do — you will be editing a strong document rather than trying to reconstruct two years from memory.
