How to Study Chemistry in Class 11 — The First 30 Days
Class 11 chemistry is not a harder version of Class 10 chemistry. It is a different subject. In Class 10 you could read the chapter twice and answer most questions. In Class 11 the questions are numerical, the language is precise, and one weak chapter quietly damages the next four. Most of the students who tell me in Class 12 that "chemistry is not my subject" actually lost the thread in the first month of Class 11 and never got it back.
This article is about that first month only. Not the whole year, not the board exam — the first 30 days, when the habits you build become the habits you keep.
What actually goes wrong in month one
Three things, almost always:
- The student treats the mole concept as one chapter instead of as the language of the whole subject. It is used in equilibrium, in electrochemistry, in solutions, in thermodynamics — everywhere.
- The student reads chemistry but does not write chemistry. Reading a solved example feels like understanding. It is not. You only find out what you do not know when the page is blank.
- The student postpones organic chemistry because "it comes later". Organic in Class 11 is where reaction mechanism thinking starts. Starting it late is the single most common reason students find Class 12 organic impossible.
Before day 1: get your syllabus right
NCERT has been rationalised more than once in recent years and some chapters have moved or been trimmed. Do not plan from an old coaching booklet or a senior's notes. Open your own board's current syllabus document for this session, print it, and tick chapters off on it. Ten minutes of this saves weeks of studying something that is not in your paper — or worse, skipping something that is.
The 30-day plan
Week 1 — Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry (the mole).
Daily: 45 minutes of theory reading + 45 minutes of numericals. Nothing else.
By day 7 you should be able to do these without looking anything up: formula mass from a
formula, moles from mass, mass from moles, percentage composition, empirical formula from
percentage data, and a simple limiting-reagent problem.
Target: 40 numericals solved on paper this week, not 4 chapters read.
The mole is worth this much time because it is the only chapter that appears inside every other chapter. When you check your answers, check the method, not just the final number — an answer that is right by luck is worth nothing in an exam.

Week 2 — Structure of Atom.
Daily: 1 hour theory + 30 minutes numericals.
Non-negotiables by day 14: writing the electron configuration of any element up to Z = 36
from memory, the four quantum numbers and what each one restricts, and the difference
between an orbit and an orbital in your own words (not the textbook's words).
Weekend: one 60-minute self-test, closed book, no phone in the room.
Electron configuration is a mechanical skill, like long division. It becomes automatic with about 60 repetitions and never becomes automatic by reading. Write out all 36 elements by hand on a single sheet, then check them.
Week 3 — Classification of Elements & Periodicity.
Daily: 45 minutes theory + 45 minutes of "explain the trend" practice.
This chapter is scoring and short. The exam does not ask you to state a trend; it asks you
to compare two specific elements and justify it. So practise in that form:
"Which has higher first ionisation enthalpy, N or O — and why?" Write three lines of
reasoning each time.
Also start organic this week: 20 minutes a day on IUPAC nomenclature. Just naming. Nothing
else.
Week 4 — Chemical Bonding, plus first revision.
Daily: 1 hour bonding + 30 minutes revision of weeks 1–3.
Bonding targets: Lewis structures with formal charge, VSEPR shapes for at least 15 common
molecules, sigma/pi counting, and hybridisation. Draw every structure by hand.
Day 28–30: no new topic. Re-do 20 of the mole numericals from week 1 cold. If you
can still do them, your foundation is real. If you cannot, that is not a failure — it is
exactly the information you needed, four weeks in instead of four months in.
A weekday timetable that survives school

That is roughly 12 hours of chemistry a week. It is less than most students think they need and more than most actually do.
Mistakes that create a two-year backlog
- Collecting books. One NCERT plus one practice book is enough for Class 11. Students with five reference books finish none of them.
- Highlighting instead of solving. A colourful book is not a studied book.
- Watching a solution video before attempting the problem. Give every numerical a genuine 10 minutes first. The struggle is the learning; the video only feels like it.
- Skipping units and significant figures. In board marking, a correct number with a missing or wrong unit loses marks. Build the habit now, when it is cheap.
- Waiting for "after the first unit test" to start. The syllabus does not wait, and the backlog compounds like interest.
How to tell, at day 30, whether it is working
Do not judge by how you feel. Judge by three checks: can you solve a mole numerical you have never seen, cold, in under five minutes? Can you write the electron configuration of element 29 without hesitating? Can you name a branched alkane correctly on the first try? Two out of three means you are on track. Zero or one means you need help now, not in January — and asking for it early is not a weakness, it is simply cheaper.
