Online Chemistry Classes — What Actually Makes Them Work
For anyone preparing for IIT-JAM, GATE, CSIR-NET or CUET-PG outside a major coaching city, online classes are not a compromise — they are usually the only way to reach a teacher who has actually taught that paper for years. But "online class" covers two products that behave completely differently, and the word hides the difference until the money is spent.
This article is about telling them apart, and about the half of the work that no programme can do for you.

Neither is better in the abstract. The failure is buying a recorded library when what you actually needed was someone expecting you at 7 pm.
Seven questions to ask before paying
- How many students in the live batch? Ask for a number, not "small". A teacher who cannot see who is silent cannot help them.
- Who teaches my batch? Not who appears in the advertisement. Ask to sit in one ordinary class, not a polished demonstration lecture.
- How many full-length mock tests, and how large is the cohort? For a competitive paper, your rank against a real cohort is the only calibration that means anything.
- How fast is a doubt answered? Same day, next day, or "post it on the forum"? Ask for the typical turnaround, then test it in the first week.
- Are recordings available, for how long, and can I download them? Bandwidth is not uniform across India, and a course you cannot rewatch during revision is worth less.
- What is the syllabus schedule with dates? A programme that cannot show you a dated plan has not made one.
- What is the refund and exit policy, in writing? Ask before, not after.
The half you have to build yourself
Online removes travel, supervision and the room full of people also working. The first is a gift. The other two you must replace deliberately, or the class becomes television.
A session protocol that turns watching into learning
Before (5 min): read the topic heading in your textbook so the lecture is
your second exposure, not your first. This one change makes an hour of class roughly twice
as useful.
During: camera on if the batch allows it, phone in another room, and write
only what the teacher adds beyond the book. Never transcribe. Mark anything you did not
follow with a bracketed question mark and move on — do not stall the lecture in your head.
Immediately after (20 min): close everything and re-derive the main result
of the class on a blank page from memory. Whatever you cannot reproduce is what you did not
learn, and you now know it within twenty minutes instead of at the next mock.
Same evening: post every bracketed question to the doubt channel. Unasked
doubts compound.
Weekend: solve a problem set on that week's topics, timed, and check it.
Set up your end properly — it takes one evening
- A fixed place and a fixed time. Studying wherever you happen to be sitting is the single biggest difference between online candidates who finish and those who drift.
- Paper and pen in front of you during every class. Chemistry is written, not watched. Structures, derivations and mechanisms have to move through your hand.
- A second surface if you can — a printed sheet, a notebook, a tablet. Switching windows between the lecture and your notes costs attention every time.
- Test the connection at the class hour, not at midnight. If it is unreliable, choose a programme whose recordings download.
- An accountability partner. One other candidate, one message a day stating what you finished. It sounds trivial and it substitutes surprisingly well for the presence of a room.
What goes wrong, honestly
- Watching at 2× and calling it revision. Speed is fine for a topic you already know and useless for a topic you do not.
- The backlog spiral. Miss three recorded classes and the pile becomes psychologically unclimbable. Rule: never let the backlog exceed two classes. If it does, skip forward to the live topic and fill the gap on the weekend — do not fall behind the batch trying to be complete.
- Buying a second course to fix the first. Two half-finished courses beat nobody. Finish one.
- Never speaking. Candidates who ask questions get taught; candidates who stay muted for six months are, from the teacher's side, indistinguishable from candidates who left.
- Treating downloaded notes as studied material. A folder of PDFs is not preparation. What counts is what you can reproduce on a blank page.
- Skipping the mock because the day was bad. The exam will also fall on a day you did not choose. Sit every mock at the scheduled time.
How to tell in week four whether it is working
Do not judge by how good the teaching feels — good teaching is pleasant to watch and that is exactly why it is a poor signal. Judge by three checks. Can you reproduce last week's main derivation on a blank page? Has your doubt turnaround been what you were promised? And is your mock score moving, even slightly, in the topics already covered?
If all three are yes, stay and stop shopping. If two are no after four weeks, the problem is either the programme or your protocol — and the protocol is the one you can change tonight.
