Preparing for a Chemistry Unit Test in Three Days
A unit test is announced on Monday and it is on Thursday. You have not started. Most students respond by opening the textbook at page one and reading until they fall asleep, then discovering on Thursday morning that they read three sections and remember none of them.
Three days is not enough to learn a chapter from nothing. It is enough to convert a chapter you have half-attended into marks โ but only if you decide in advance what you are giving up. This article is that decision, made in order.
The idea the whole plan rests on
Step 1 โ Count the hours before you plan them
Do this first, in two minutes, on the back of the notice itself. Count only the blocks that genuinely exist after school, coaching, travel, meals and sleep.
A typical count for a test on Thursday, announced Monday morning

Now subtract the two things that must happen and are always the first to be dropped: 2.0 h for one timed self-test plus its review, and 1.0 h for building and re-reading a mistake list. That leaves 8.5 โ 2.0 โ 1.0 = 5.5 hours of first-time study.
If the chapter has 5 sub-topics, that is 5.5 รท 5 = 1.1 hours, about 66 minutes, for each one. Any plan that assumes more than 66 minutes per sub-topic is not a plan, it is a wish.
The number will be different for you. Whatever it is, it is your real budget, and knowing it on Monday is what stops Wednesday night from becoming a panic.
Step 2 โ Rank the sub-topics before you open the book
Write the chapter's sub-topics as a list. Against each one, write two letters: how heavily your teacher taught it (H, M, L) and how confident you are (H, M, L). Then study in this order:
- Taught heavily, low confidence โ the highest return per hour there is.
- Taught heavily, medium confidence โ a small push turns these into full marks.
- Taught lightly, low confidence โ worth one pass, not three.
- Anything you are already confident in โ one quick recall check only.
Students naturally do the opposite: they start with what they already know, because it feels good. Three days is too short to spend on comfort.
Step 3 โ The three days, by purpose

Day 3 is the one students cut. It is also the only day that tells you the truth about what you know, and there is still one night left to act on it. Cutting it means walking into the test with an untested guess about your own preparation.
Step 4 โ Practise the numericals with your own arithmetic
Chemistry unit tests almost always carry a numerical or two, and those are the marks that are fully in your control. Do them fully โ not "I know the method", but the actual digits.
Worked example โ preparing a standard solution
Question: How much NaOH is needed to make 250 mL of 0.100 M solution?
Step 1 โ molar mass. Na = 22.990, O = 15.999, H = 1.008.
M(NaOH) = 22.990 + 15.999 + 1.008 = 39.997 g/mol (โ 40.00 g/mol)
Step 2 โ moles needed. Volume must be in litres: 250 mL = 0.250 L.
n = M ร V = 0.100 mol/L ร 0.250 L = 0.0250 mol
Step 3 โ mass.
mass = n ร molar mass = 0.0250 mol ร 39.997 g/mol = 0.99993 g โ 1.00 g
Cross-check by a second route. If instead you took 25.0 mL of an existing
0.100 M stock and diluted it to 250 mL, the dilution formula gives
Mโ = MโVโ รท Vโ = (0.100 ร 25.0) รท 250 = 2.50 รท 250 = 0.0100 M โ
exactly one tenth, as a ten-fold dilution must be. A cross-check like this catches a slipped
decimal in seconds, which is the single most common way marks are lost in a unit test.
Step 5 โ The mistake list is the revision
Keep one page. Every question you get wrong on Day 2 and Day 3 gets one line: the question type, and the reason it went wrong โ not "silly mistake", but the actual reason. "Forgot to convert mL to L." "Used molecular mass where equivalent weight was needed." "Balanced the equation but did not check the charge."
On Thursday morning you read that one page instead of the chapter. Fifteen minutes on your own errors is worth more than an hour re-reading text you already understood.
What goes wrong in a three-day preparation
- Starting at page one. The chapter is not ordered by difficulty or by what your teacher emphasised. Study by the ranked list, not by page number.
- Reading solved examples instead of solving them. Reading a solution feels like learning and produces nothing you can reproduce under time pressure.
- Making new notes. Copying is the most comfortable and least useful activity available in three days. Use the notes you already have, even if they are untidy.
- Skipping the timed test. Speed is a separate skill from knowledge, and the test is timed whether you practised for time or not.
- Studying past your normal sleep time on the last night. The material you gain is small; the recall you lose the next morning is not.
- Attempting the whole chapter equally. Two sub-topics done properly beat five done vaguely, because chemistry questions ask you to use the idea, not recognise it.
- No cross-check on numericals. A second route, a unit check, or a "does this magnitude make sense" check would catch most of the arithmetic marks students lose.
If this is happening every time
A three-day scramble is a fine emergency response and a terrible routine. If every unit test is a scramble, the problem is upstream: the class is being attended but not reviewed the same day, so every test becomes first-time learning.
