Reading a Research Paper for the First Time

The first research paper you are handed is usually demoralising. You read the first paragraph four times, do not recognise half the vocabulary, and conclude that you are not ready for research. Almost every researcher has had that experience, and almost none of them were actually unready. They were reading the paper the way one reads a textbook chapter โ€” front to back, trying to understand every sentence โ€” and papers are not written to be read that way.

A paper is written for people already working in that narrow area. It compresses years of context into an introduction, states a claim, and presents evidence. Reading it usefully is a technique, and the technique can be learnt in an afternoon.

Read the sections in this order

Title โ†’ Abstract โ†’ Figures and their captions โ†’ Conclusion โ†’ Introduction โ†’ Results and Discussion โ†’ Methods (only if you need to repeat the work) โ†’ References

The figures come third on purpose. In chemistry, the figures and tables usually are the result; the prose explains and argues around them. If you can understand the figures and their captions, you have understood most of what the paper found, and the text then becomes far easier to follow because you already know where it is going.

The three-pass method

Most papers deserve only pass 1. A few deserve pass 2. Very few deserve pass 3 โ€” usually the two or three papers your own project is built directly on. Deciding early which pass a paper deserves is most of what experienced readers are doing when they seem to read quickly.

A worked first pass

Suppose you are given a paper reporting a new catalyst for a known reaction. These are the questions to answer in the first ten minutes, in order:

  • What problem existed before? Usually one sentence, near the end of the abstract's opening. Often: the old catalyst was expensive, or needed harsh conditions, or was not selective.
  • What did they make or do? The new material, or the new procedure.
  • What did they measure to show it worked? Yield, selectivity, turnover, stability over repeated cycles.
  • Compared with what? This is the question beginners skip and the one that matters most. A result with no comparison to the existing method tells you very little.
  • What do they admit it does not do? Good papers state their limits, usually late in the discussion.

Write your answers as five short lines. If you can produce those five lines, you have read the paper more effectively than someone who read every word and remembers none of it.

Reading a figure properly โ€” and checking its numbers

Treat every figure with the same five questions: what is on each axis and in what units, what is the control or comparison, are there error bars and what do they represent, how many measurements is each point, and does the trend actually support the sentence in the text that cites this figure?

You can often go further and verify a stated number yourself. Kinetics papers are the easiest place to start, because an Arrhenius plot is a straight line whose slope carries the activation energy.

Checking a reported activation energy. Suppose a figure shows ln k against 1/T with a fitted slope of โˆ’6000 K, and the text reports an activation energy of about 50 kJ/mol. Is that consistent?

It is consistent. Had the text said 5 kJ/mol or 500 kJ/mol, you would have found a real problem โ€” either a unit error or a misread axis โ€” in under a minute. Doing this once or twice changes how you read: you stop receiving numbers and start testing them.

The same habit applies to spectra, concentration data and fitted lines generally. If a paper reports a linear calibration, you can re-fit the plotted points yourself and see whether the slope and intercept match what is claimed.

Vocabulary: do not look up everything

Looking up every unfamiliar term stops you finishing the paper, and most of those terms will not appear again. Instead, underline unknown terms as you go and look up only the ones that recur โ€” those are the concepts the field is built on. After five or six papers in one area the vocabulary largely stops being a problem, because the same twenty terms keep returning. That is why reading five papers in one narrow area is far easier than reading five papers from five different areas.

Judging whether to believe it

Mistakes that make papers feel impossible

  • Reading front to back on the first attempt. The introduction is written for people who already know the field; it is the hardest section, not the easiest.
  • Starting with a review article's reference list and trying to read forty papers. Read two closely related papers properly instead.
  • Skipping the figures. In experimental chemistry the figures are the evidence. Prose describing a figure is not a substitute for the figure.
  • Trying to understand every equation on the first pass. Identify what the equation is for first; derive it later, if at all.
  • Taking the abstract as the finding. Abstracts state results at their most favourable. The limitations live in the discussion.
  • Not writing anything down. A paper read and not summarised in your own words is a paper you will re-read from scratch in two months.
  • Judging a paper by how difficult it felt. Difficulty usually measures your distance from that sub-field, not the quality of the work.

Building the habit

One paper a week, first pass only, from an area close to your own coursework or project. Keep a single file with five lines per paper: the claim, the evidence, the comparison, the limitation, and why it matters to you. After three months you will have a small personal literature map, and โ€” more usefully โ€” reading a paper will have stopped feeling like an examination and started feeling like a conversation with someone who did an experiment you are interested in.
