Rebuilding Chemistry Basics When You Are Already in Class 12
Class 12 has started, the syllabus is moving, and you have realised that your Class 11 chemistry was never properly learnt. Solutions makes no sense because concentration never made sense. Electrochemistry looks like a foreign language. The usual advice — "go back and do Class 11 again" — is useless, because there is no spare year to do it in.
There is a better answer, and it is narrower than you expect. You do not need all of Class 11. You need about six ideas from it, because those six are the ones Class 12 keeps standing on. Repair those, keep up with current chapters at the same time, and the gap closes in about three weeks of honest work.
Which Class 11 topics actually block Class 12
Before repairing anything, be clear about what is load-bearing and what is not. Not every weak Class 11 chapter will hurt you this year.

Read the right-hand column carefully. Those symptoms are how you diagnose yourself. If you can quote the formula but freeze when the question is worded differently, the problem is almost never the Class 12 chapter — it is the Class 11 idea underneath it.
The one calculation everything else sits on
If you repair only one thing, repair the mole. Nearly every numerical in Class 12 physical chemistry starts by converting a given mass or volume into moles.
Here n is the amount in moles, m the mass in grams, M the molar mass in g/mol, N the number of particles and NA = 6.022 × 10²³ per mole. Note the trap in the third formula: the volume is the volume of the solution, not the volume of solvent you added.
Test yourself right now. 5.85 g of NaCl is dissolved in water and made up to 250 mL. Find the molarity.
M(NaCl) = 22.990 + 35.45 = 58.44 g/mol
n = 5.85 ÷ 58.44 = 0.1001 mol
V = 250 mL = 0.250 L
Molarity = 0.1001 ÷ 0.250 = 0.400 mol/L

A 45-minute repair slot, run daily
Do not stop your current chapters. Add a separate short slot instead, and protect it. The reason is practical: your school and your tests keep moving whether or not your basics are ready, so a plan that pauses Class 12 fails within a week.

- 10 min — read one specific Class 11 idea from the NCERT text, not a whole chapter. "Oxidation number rules", not "Redox reactions".
- 25 min — solve six questions on it, written out fully on paper. Six solved properly beats twenty half-solved.
- 10 min — mark your own work and write, in one line, what went wrong in each mistake. "Forgot the bracket in Ca(OH)₂" is useful. "Silly mistake" is not.
A three-week schedule that fits around school
Week 1 — the quantitative base. Mole concept; molar mass; molarity, molality and mole fraction; dilution. End of the week: solve ten mixed numericals with the formulas hidden.
Week 2 — redox and periodicity. Oxidation number rules; balancing redox equations; atomic structure and electron configuration; the reasons behind periodic trends rather than the trends themselves. These carry Electrochemistry, p-block and d-block.
Week 3 — general organic chemistry. Nomenclature, hybridisation, inductive effect, resonance and stability of intermediates. Give this the most time. Class 12 organic is a small number of ideas applied repeatedly, and students who "cannot do organic" are almost always missing these five.
Three weeks is not a magic number — it is what 45 minutes a day realistically covers. If you have less time, run the same order more slowly. The order matters more than the pace, because each week's topic is used by the next.
Mistakes that waste the repair effort
- Restarting the whole Class 11 book. You will spend two months on chapters Class 12 barely uses and run out of time before organic chemistry, which needed the time most.
- Watching lectures instead of solving. Watching a solved problem feels like learning and is not. The recall only forms when your own pen produces the steps on a blank page.
- Trying to repair basics during the board exam month. After the pre-boards, switch entirely to past papers and revision. Repair work belongs to the early and middle part of the year.
- Memorising Class 12 organic reactions to avoid fixing GOC. This works for one test and collapses in the next, because the number of reactions keeps growing while your understanding does not.
- Ignoring the maths. Logarithms, indices and simple algebra appear in kinetics, electrochemistry and equilibrium. If logs are shaky, one evening on log rules pays back more than another chemistry chapter.
- Not writing the mistake down. A wrong answer teaches you nothing until you name the specific reason. That one line in your log is the whole method.
How to know the repair is working
Do not judge by feeling confident — that arrives late and unreliably. Judge by three checkable signs. First, you can start a numerical without looking at the formula sheet, because you know what quantity the question is really asking for. Second, your errors change character: from "I did not know what to do" to "I made an arithmetic slip". Third, a new Class 12 chapter feels like an extension of something you already know instead of a fresh subject. When all three appear, stop the repair slot and give the time back to current work.
