Teaching as a Career for Chemistry Postgraduates

By Aniket Bhardwaj ยท 10 September 2026 ยท Careers & Higher Study

Teaching is the most common destination for a chemistry postgraduate in India, and the one people are given the least honest information about. It is usually presented either as a fallback ("if research does not work out") or as a calling. It is neither. It is a skilled profession with several distinct entry routes, each with its own qualification requirement, its own recruitment cycle and its own daily reality โ€” and choosing between them badly costs years.

This article separates those routes, states what each genuinely requires, and is honest about the trade-offs. It deliberately quotes no salary figures: pay depends on the institution, the state, the pay commission applicable and the specific advertisement, and any number quoted here would be out of date or simply wrong. Read the actual recruitment notification for that.

Teaching is not one job โ€” it is at least five

Choose by the age you want to teach and the content depth you want to work at โ€” not by which vacancy appeared first.
RouteWho you teachTypical qualification routeWhere vacancies are announced
School teacher (senior secondary)Class 11โ€“12 chemistryMSc plus a B.Ed.; for government schools a teacher eligibility test is normally requiredSchool websites, government recruitment portals, state education department
Government school systemsClass 11โ€“12 chemistryAs above, through the recruiting body's own written test and interviewOfficial recruitment boards for central and state school systems
College / university facultyBSc and MSc studentsPostgraduate degree plus the national or state eligibility test; research qualifications weigh heavilyUniversity and college websites, national employment newspapers
Coaching and competitive-exam teachingBoard, JEE/NEET, IIT-JAM, GATE, CSIR-NET aspirantsSubject mastery and a demo class; formal teaching degrees usually not requiredInstitute websites, direct approach, referrals
Content, curriculum and edtechIndirectly โ€” through material you writeStrong subject knowledge plus writing abilityCompany career pages, publisher listings

Two cautions about that table. First, eligibility rules for college and university teaching in India are set by the UGC and have been revised more than once โ€” the weight given to a PhD, to the national eligibility test and to a state-level test has changed across regulations. Do not rely on what a senior told you three years ago; read the current UGC regulation and, more importantly, the eligibility clause in the specific advertisement you are applying against. Second, teacher eligibility test requirements differ between central and state school systems and between school levels. Verify against the live notification every single time.

The honest trade-offs

Each route trades something real for something else. Knowing which trade you are making is the whole decision.

RouteYou gainYou give up
School teachingStructured hours, a defined syllabus, long-term stability in a permanent postDepth โ€” you will teach the same syllabus repeatedly; limited research contact
College / universitySubject depth, research possibility, academic autonomyA long and uncertain entry path; heavy administrative load once inside
Coaching / competitive examsFast entry on merit, intense subject work, immediate feedbackResults pressure, irregular hours, less job security than a permanent post
Content and curriculumFlexible location, scale โ€” one chapter reaches thousandsYou rarely meet the student; deadlines replace timetables

What actually gets you hired: the demo class

For almost every teaching route in India, a demo class decides the outcome. Candidates prepare the content and lose on the teaching. Here is what a panel is watching, and how to prepare.

A workable demo-class preparation process:

1. Pick a topic you can finish. Not your favourite research area โ€” a single, self-contained idea that fits the time given. "Why the first ionisation enthalpy of oxygen is lower than that of nitrogen" is a better demo topic than "periodic trends".

2. Open with the question, not the definition. Put the puzzle on the board first. A class that knows what problem is being solved pays attention.

3. Build one worked example fully. Panels want to see you handle a calculation live, including a step where you say why a common shortcut fails.

4. Plan two questions you will ask the class. Not "any doubts?" โ€” a specific question with a checkable answer. This is the single thing that separates a lecture from teaching.

5. Rehearse the board work. Write the actual board layout on paper beforehand. Untidy boards read as unprepared regardless of how good the explanation is.

6. Finish early rather than late. Running over is read as poor planning; a clean summary in the last minute is read as control.

Two realistic route plans

Route A โ€” you want to teach Class 11โ€“12 and want stability. Finish the MSc, then take a B.Ed. Use the B.Ed. teaching practice seriously; it is where you learn classroom management, which subject knowledge does not give you. Sit the teacher eligibility test that applies to the school system you are targeting. Apply to private schools in parallel while preparing for government recruitment, because private school experience makes you a stronger candidate later, not a weaker one.

Route B โ€” you want to teach at college level. Treat the national eligibility test as the immediate goal during or straight after the MSc, because it is the gate for both a teaching career and a research fellowship. Then start a PhD. Teach part time during the PhD if your institute permits it โ€” guest lectures, tutorials, laboratory demonstrating. Faculty selection committees look for evidence that you have actually stood in front of a class, and a PhD alone does not provide that evidence.

Skills the MSc did not give you, and how to get them

What goes wrong

  • Treating teaching as the backup plan. Students sense it immediately, and it shows in a demo class. If you do not want the job, the panel will know before you do.
  • Assuming your MSc knowledge is enough. Teaching Class 12 well needs a different mastery from clearing an MSc paper โ€” you must know every wrong route a student can take, not just the right one.
  • Applying without reading the eligibility clause. Every year candidates are rejected at scrutiny for a missing qualification that was stated plainly in the notification.
  • Chasing every vacancy at once. School recruitment, college recruitment and coaching hiring reward different preparation. Pick a primary route and run at most one secondary route alongside it.
  • Quoting salary expectations from hearsay. Pay structures differ by institution, state and pay commission. Ask the employer in writing; do not plan a life around a figure someone repeated on a forum.
  • Neglecting the eligibility test during the MSc. The national eligibility test opens both teaching and research doors at once, and it is far easier to clear while the syllabus is still fresh.
  • Never observing another teacher. Sitting in on a good colleague's class for one hour teaches more than a week of reading about pedagogy.

Is it the right career for you?

A short honest test. Do you enjoy the moment a confused student stops being confused more than you enjoy being the person who knew the answer? Are you willing to teach the mole concept for the fifteenth year and still care whether this particular batch understands it? Can you accept that most of the work is invisible โ€” marking, planning, re-explaining โ€” and that the visible part is the smallest part? If yes to all three, teaching will suit you and you will be good at it. If the honest answer to any of them is no, look at the research, industry, analytical and regulatory routes instead; they are not lesser choices, they are different ones.

Teaching chemistry means doing the numericals live, in front of a class. The ABC Chemistry Calculator Suite covers molar mass, concentration, equilibrium, thermodynamics, kinetics and electrochemistry tools you can use to build and check worked examples for your lessons and question papers.
