What it asks for

The formula

Atoms of element X on the left = Atoms of element X on the right, for every element X

From the article Chemical Equation Balancing — Rules and Worked Examples.

Worked example

Skeleton: CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O

Carbon: 1 on the left, 1 on the right. Already balanced.
Hydrogen: 4 on the left, only 2 on the right. Put 2 before H₂O → 4 H on the right.
Oxygen last: right side now has 2 (in CO₂) + 2 (in 2H₂O) = 4 O atoms. Left side needs 4 O, so put 2 before O₂.

CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O

Check — C: 1 = 1 · H: 4 = 4 · O: 4 = 4. ✔

About this tool

This is one of the tools in the ABC Chemistry Calculator Suite, a free calculator built for IIT-JAM, CSIR-NET, GATE and CUET (Chemical Science) preparation. Nothing is behind a login and no result is stored on a server — the arithmetic runs in your own browser.

The Chemical Equation Balancer calculator above is the live tool — type your values and press its button; the answer appears in the same box. The link under it opens the full suite with this tool already selected, next to the others.
