The Indian Army recruits officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Agniveers (soldiers) through the Directorate General of Recruiting under the Adjutant General's Branch. Officer entry runs through UPSC-conducted exams (NDA & NA, Combined Defence Services) as well as direct technical entries such as TES, TGC, SSC Technical, NCC Special Entry and the Judge Advocate General's Department for law graduates. Since 2022, soldier-level recruitment across General Duty, Technical, Clerk/Store Keeper Technical and Tradesman categories is conducted under the Agnipath scheme as Agniveers, via an Online Common Entrance Exam followed by recruitment rallies with physical and medical tests. The Territorial Army offers part-time officer commissions, and the Military Nursing Service recruits nursing officers separately. All notifications and online applications are published only on the official Join Indian Army portal.

Indian Army recruits mainly through a written competitive examination, or a written examination followed by an interview, or direct recruitment, without a competitive exam. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group A/C/contractual.
