The Directorate General Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards, established by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 17 November 1962, is the central body that sets standards, training curricula and coordination for Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards organisations across all states and UTs, originally organised into Fire, Civil Defence, Home Guards and Communication sections. It is a policy/coordination body rather than a large direct recruiter itself — actual Fireman and Home Guard recruitment is conducted by the individual state departments listed separately throughout this sub-category.
