DRDO is India's premier defence research agency under the Ministry of Defence, running 50+ laboratories across the country. Scientist entry (Scientist 'B') is centralised through the Recruitment & Assessment Centre (RAC), which selects candidates using a valid GATE score (engineering disciplines) or UGC-NET/CSIR-NET score (science/humanities disciplines) followed by an interview. Non-gazetted technical, administrative and allied posts such as Senior Technical Assistant and Technician are recruited by the Centre for Personnel Talent Management (CEPTAM) through its own tiered written examination. Individual DRDO laboratories additionally engage Junior Research Fellows and project staff on their own project positions.

DRDO recruits mainly through a candidate's score in a national test such as GATE or NET, or a written competitive examination, or a written examination followed by an interview. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group A/B/C/apprentice.
