GATE is not a recruiter itself but is the single most important engineering-recruitment gateway in India: a large and growing list of PSUs (including IOCL, ONGC, NTPC, PGCIL, GAIL, BHEL, SAIL, HPCL, BPCL, NLC, NHPC, MECL, HAL, BEL and many others) hire Executive/Management Trainees and Graduate Engineer Trainees directly on the basis of a candidate's GATE score, without a separate written exam, followed by group discussion/interview. The exam itself is organised each year by a different IIT or IISc on a rotational basis (IIT Madras for GATE 2027) under the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS).

GATE recruits mainly through a candidate's score in a national test such as GATE or NET. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group A.
