The National Health Mission, under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, is the umbrella Centrally Sponsored Scheme (covering the erstwhile National Rural Health Mission and National Urban Health Mission) that funds India's public primary and secondary healthcare system, maternal/child health, immunisation and disease-control programmes. Actual recruitment happens almost entirely at the STATE level — each state/UT runs its own State Health Society which contractually engages Community Health Officers, ANMs, Staff Nurses, contractual Medical Officers and support staff. The central Mission Directorate and its National Health Systems Resource Centre separately recruit a smaller number of national-level consultants and programme staff.

NHM recruits mainly through a direct interview, without a separate written exam, or direct recruitment, without a competitive exam. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group contractual.
