Equilibrium: the Chapter That Needs Drilling, Not Explaining

Students understand equilibrium in the session and cannot do the questions at home. That gap is the whole problem.

Equilibrium is conceptually reasonable and procedurally demanding. Most students follow the explanation perfectly and then cannot set up a problem, because setting it up requires a routine they have not practised. It is a chapter where more explanation does almost nothing and more supervised practice does almost everything.

The routine that has to become automatic

Write the balanced equation. Set out initial amounts, change, and equilibrium amounts underneath it. Substitute into the equilibrium expression. Solve, checking whether an approximation is justified.

Four steps, identical every time. Students who improvise the layout get lost in longer problems; students who use the same table on every question find the algebra is the only variable part.

The approximation is where students go wrong most often. Assuming the change is negligible is valid when the equilibrium constant is small relative to the initial concentration, and invalid otherwise. Making the check explicit — state the assumption, verify it afterwards — is both good practice and worth marks.

Le Chatelier, which is examined as reasoning

That distinction between temperature and everything else is the one students most often blur, and it is asked directly.

Why explanation does not fix it

Because the difficulty is in execution rather than comprehension. A student who has understood equilibrium and cannot do a problem needs to be watched doing one, with the tutor intervening at the point the setup goes wrong — not to have the concept explained again.

This is the clearest example in Class 11 chemistry of a chapter where session time should be spent with the student writing rather than the tutor talking.

What it leads to

Ionic equilibrium follows immediately and uses the same machinery with acids and bases. A student who drilled the routine here finds that chapter mechanical; one who did not meets the same difficulty twice.

It is worth telling the student that explicitly while they are grinding through the practice. Drilling a routine is dull work and students do it more willingly when they know it buys them the next chapter as well as this one. Framed as an investment rather than as repetition, the practice tends to actually happen.

Questions parents ask

My child understands it in the session and cannot do homework.

The defining signature of this chapter. It needs supervised practice, not more explanation.

Is the approximation always allowed?

No, and stating the assumption and checking it afterwards is both correct practice and worth marks.

How much practice does it need?

More than most chapters. The setup has to become automatic before the algebra can be attended to.

Does it matter for Class 12?

Directly — ionic equilibrium, and the reasoning recurs in electrochemistry and kinetics.
