Why nobody can honestly quote you a rate on the first phone call — and the four things that actually determine what you will pay.
A home tuition fee is not a price list, it is an outcome of four variables: the class level, how many subjects, how many sessions a week, and whether the tutor travels to you or teaches online. Change any one and the number changes. That is why a rate quoted before anyone has asked what your child needs tells you something about the seller and nothing about the cost — and why this page explains the variables instead of printing a figure.

1. Class level
A Class 12 Physics session and a Class 4 all-subjects session are not the same work. Senior classes need a subject specialist, more preparation between sessions, and someone who knows the current paper pattern rather than the one from five years ago. Junior classes need patience and range. Both are skilled; they are not interchangeable, and the market does not price them the same.
2. Number of subjects
Up to about Class 8, one tutor can reasonably carry Maths and Science together, and the combined arrangement costs less than two separate ones. From Class 9 upward that stops being true — Physics, Chemistry and Biology diverge fast enough that a single tutor covering all three at exam standard is a claim worth examining. Adding a subject usually means adding a tutor, and the fee follows.
3. Sessions per week
Frequency changes both the total and, often, the per-session rate. Two sessions a week is a maintenance arrangement. Four or five, in a board year, is a different commitment on both sides. Be wary of buying frequency to solve a problem that is actually diagnostic — more hours of the wrong thing is the most expensive mistake in tuition.
4. Home or online
Home tuition includes the tutor’s travel, and in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon that is real time, not a rounding error. Crossing between Gurgaon and South Delhi in the evening, or between Noida sectors at the wrong hour, can cost a tutor more time than the session itself. One-to-one online removes that entirely, which is why it usually costs less and why it is often easier to schedule at a sensible hour.
What a fee should not depend on: your address. A quote that rises because of the society or the sector is pricing the postcode, not the teaching. Travel time is a legitimate factor; perceived ability to pay is not.
The questions worth asking before you agree a rate
- Is this per session or per month, and how many sessions does a month contain?
- What happens to the fee for a session the tutor cancels, and for one you cancel?
- Is there a separate charge during exam months, and if so, agreed when?
- Will it be the same tutor every week? A rotating tutor at the same price is not the same product.
- What happens after the demo — is the rate fixed, or revised once the tutor has seen the child’s level?
That last one matters more than it sounds. A rate agreed before a diagnostic is a rate agreed on incomplete information, and it will be revisited by someone. Better that it is revisited openly, with a reason, than quietly.
Cheap, expensive, and the thing in between
The cheapest arrangement in this market is usually a group batch described as tuition, or a rotating pool of tutors. Both cost less because the thing being sold is less: shared attention, or a restart of the relationship every few weeks. The most expensive is not automatically the best either — it frequently prices reputation rather than the hours your child actually receives.
The question that separates them is simple, and it is not about money: does the tutor find out what your child cannot do before deciding what to teach? An arrangement that starts with a diagnosis is worth paying for at almost any point on the range. One that starts with the current chapter is overpriced at any figure, because the marks it moves are the ones the child would have got anyway.
Why will you not publish a rate card?
Because a single number for “home tuition” across Classes 1 to 12, every subject, every frequency and both modes would be wrong for nearly everyone reading it. The four variables above decide the figure, and it takes one phone call to fix them.
Is online tuition cheaper than home tuition?
Usually, yes, because no travel time is being paid for. Whether it is the right choice depends on the child’s age and subject rather than on the saving.
Do fees differ between Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon?
Only through travel. The teaching does not change by city, and one-to-one online is unaffected by geography.
Is a demo class charged?
Ask before booking, and ask what the demo is meant to establish. A demo that is a sales pitch is worth nothing at any price; a demo that produces an honest diagnosis of where the child stands is useful even if you go elsewhere.
Should I pay monthly or per session?
Either can be reasonable. What matters is that the arrangement is written down — sessions per month, what happens to missed ones, and notice on both sides — before the first session rather than after the first disagreement.
