In board mathematics the marks are distributed across the working, not concentrated on the answer. A student who computes mentally and writes only the result is claiming one part of a question worth several. It is the most avoidable loss on any maths paper and it takes about two weeks of strict marking to correct.

How a maths question is actually marked
A multi-mark question has a marking scheme that awards specific marks for specific steps — the formula chosen, the substitution, an intermediate result, the final answer with units. A student who writes only the last of those receives only the last mark.
The corollary surprises students more: a student who writes the method correctly and makes an arithmetic slip at the end keeps most of the marks. Method is worth more than the answer, which is the opposite of what most students assume.
Show a student one marked example of each case, once. A right answer scoring two out of five, next to a wrong answer scoring four out of five. Nothing persuades faster, and most students have never seen either.
What "showing working" actually means
- The formula written before numbers are substituted.
- The substitution shown, with units where relevant.
- At least one intermediate line rather than jumping to the result.
- The final answer stated clearly, with units, and returned to the words of the question where it was a word problem.
Four lines. Students resist on the grounds of time, and in timed practice the students who write them generally finish comparably and score better.
Where it costs the most
On the longer questions, which are worth the most marks and which students attempt last when the clock is running. Working compresses under pressure precisely where it is worth most, which is why timed practice is where this habit has to be built rather than in relaxed homework.
How to fix it
Mark practice work on the steps, separately from marking on correctness, for two weeks. Keep two columns — marks lost to errors, marks lost to missing working — and show the student the totals. The second column is usually larger than they expect, and it closes quickly once it is visible.

Does this apply in Class 10 as well as 12?
Yes, throughout board mathematics. Building it in Class 10 means it is automatic by Class 12.
