In salt analysis the marks are for the systematic procedure and the observations recorded along the way, not only for naming the salt correctly. Students who identify it by recognition, or who work out the answer and then write a tidy set of observations backwards, lose marks they could have kept simply by writing down what they actually did.

The procedure is the answer
Salt analysis is examined as a method: preliminary tests, then the systematic group separation for the cation, then the confirmatory tests, with observations and inferences recorded at each stage. A student who writes only "the salt is X" has skipped almost everything that carries credit.
Marks are also given for the inference drawn from each observation — the reasoning step between what was seen and what it means. Students routinely record observations and omit the inference, which is half the credit on each line.
Writing the observations backwards from a guessed answer is visible and it is penalised. Real analysis produces some ambiguous or negative results; a record where every test came out cleanly positive in the right order reads as constructed, and it also leaves the student unable to answer the obvious viva question about anything that did not work.
The record format that scores
- Experiment, observation, inference in three columns, on every line.
- Negative results recorded too, because they narrow the possibilities and are part of the reasoning.
- Equations written for the confirmatory tests, balanced, with conditions where relevant.
- A concluding statement naming both ions, not just the salt.
The common practical errors
Contaminated apparatus producing a false positive, insufficient washing between tests, and adding reagents in the wrong order so a later test is compromised. Each is a technique issue rather than a chemistry one, and each is best fixed by doing the analysis several times rather than by reading about it.
The other frequent problem is rushing the preliminary tests, which are what narrow the field and save time later.
How to prepare for it
Perform the analyses, more than once, and write the record each time in the exam format. Reading a salt analysis chart produces recognition and no ability to work systematically under observation, which is precisely what the exam assesses.
