A child can shade three parts of a circle correctly and still believe that one-eighth is bigger than one-quarter.

Fractions go wrong in Classes 4 and 5 because they are taught as rules before they are understood as quantities. A child who does not feel that a fraction is a number of a definite size will add the tops and bottoms, compare by the denominator, and be unable to see that two-quarters and one-half are the same thing. The idea has to come first.

A fraction is three different things, and school introduces them in a rush
By the end of Class 5 a child is expected to hold three ideas at once. A fraction is a part of a whole, which is the pizza-and-circle picture they meet first. A fraction is also a number with a place on the number line, sitting between 0 and 1, or beyond it. And a fraction is a division waiting to happen, which is why three-quarters and three divided by four are the same.
The first meaning is taught thoroughly. The second is often skipped. The third arrives quietly and is never named. That is the gap. A child who only has the pizza picture can shade parts and answer textbook questions, but has no way to think about where two-thirds sits relative to three-quarters, because pictures of two different wholes cannot be compared.
The errors that tell you which meaning is missing
- Adding straight across. One-third plus one-quarter written as two-sevenths. The child is treating the fraction as two separate counts rather than one quantity.
- Bigger bottom, bigger fraction. One-eighth judged larger than one-quarter because eight is larger than four. Cutting the same roti into more pieces makes each piece smaller, and this has to be felt, not stated.
- Equivalence as a trick. The child can turn one-half into four-eighths by multiplying, but does not believe the two are the same amount. Ask which they would rather have. If they hesitate, the idea has not landed.
The thing most parents get wrong here. Drilling lowest common multiples looks like progress, because the addition sums start coming out right. It is the same imitation problem in a new costume. The marks rise for a term and then ratio and percentage arrive in Class 6, and nothing transfers, because there was never an idea underneath to transfer.
How the idea is actually built
Three tools do most of the work, and none of them is a worksheet.
The first is folding. A strip of paper folded in half, then in half again, then again, produces halves, quarters and eighths that the child made themselves. They can see one-quarter sitting exactly on top of two-eighths. Equivalence stops being a rule and becomes an observation.
The second is the number line, drawn long and marked carefully. Fractions placed on a line are quantities, not pictures, and a line lets you compare two fractions of different families. It is also where mixed numbers stop being frightening: one and a half is simply the point halfway between 1 and 2.
The third is sharing. Three chapatis shared between four people gives each person three-quarters, and doing the sharing out loud is what makes the division meaning of a fraction obvious. Once a child has said "three divided by four is three-quarters" about something real, the later work on decimals has somewhere to stand.
Why this is worth fixing in Class 5 and not Class 8
Fractions are the last piece of primary arithmetic and the first piece of everything that follows. Ratio is a fraction. Percentage is a fraction with a fixed denominator. Decimals are fractions written differently. Probability is a fraction. Algebraic expressions with denominators are fractions with letters in them. A child who is shaky here does not have one weak chapter; they have a weak floor under six years of maths.
Arranging tuition in Delhi
We provide one-to-one home tuition across Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon, and live online tuition anywhere. Delhi is large and the evening traffic is real, so a tutor will generally take students within a limited radius of where they live or already teach. That is worth knowing at the enquiry stage: a tutor who has to cross the city for a 45-minute primary session will cancel eventually, however good their intentions. Tell us the area and we will propose people for whom the slot is sustainable.
Questions parents ask
My child gets full marks in fractions. Do we still need to check anything?
Ask two questions: which is bigger, two-thirds or three-quarters, and why; and where would three-halves sit on a number line. Full marks with no answer to those means the rules are working and the idea is not.
Is it better to wait until Class 6 when fractions come again?
No. Class 6 assumes fractions and moves on to ratio and percentage. Arriving without the foundation means learning two things at once.
How many sessions a week for Class 5 maths?
Two, of about forty-five minutes. More than that at this age usually buys fatigue rather than learning.
My child is in ICSE. Is any of this different?
The idea is identical. ICSE papers tend to ask for more written working, so the habit of showing the step where you convert to a common denominator matters a little more.
