Going Through a Marked Answer Script Properly

Sort every lost mark into four causes: did not know it, misread it, ran out of time, or lost it on the page. The proportions tell you what to change.

The marked script is the most informative document your child brings home all term, and in most houses it is read for one number and then filed.

Go through the script question by question and sort every lost mark into one of four causes: did not know it, misread the question, ran out of time, or lost it on presentation and steps. The proportions tell you what to change. A script that shows twelve marks lost to carelessness needs a completely different response from one showing twelve marks lost to gaps.

What usually happens instead

The script comes home. The total on the front page is read, a conversation is had about the total, and the script goes into a drawer. Occasionally somebody looks at the two questions that got zero. The document containing a complete, itemised, examiner-verified account of what your child can and cannot do under pressure is used for its single least informative number.

The total tells you where the child stands relative to a class. It tells you almost nothing about what to do on Monday.

Sort every lost mark into one of four causes

Take a blank page, list the questions where marks were lost, and put each one in a bucket. Ask the child, without any edge in your voice, what happened on each.

  • Did not know it. The content was genuinely absent. A syllabus problem.
  • Knew it, misread the question. Answered a question that was not asked, missed a word like "not" or "briefly", or gave two of the three things required. A technique problem.
  • Knew it, ran out of time. Blank or half-finished at the end. A pacing problem.
  • Knew it, lost it on the page. Right answer, missing step, missing unit, unlabelled diagram, working not shown. A presentation problem.

Now look at the proportions, because they are the whole point of the exercise. Three of these four are not solved by studying harder, and yet studying harder is the response every family reaches for by default.

What each proportion means

A script dominated by the first bucket is straightforward, if not pleasant: the chapters are not in place, and more time on content is the honest answer.

A script dominated by the second is a reading problem, and it is one of the few things that improves quickly. Underlining the command word and the number of parts before writing anything is a habit that can be built in a fortnight.

The third points at the timed paper practice that probably has not been happening, and at which questions are being attempted first.

The fourth is the cheapest of all to fix and the most consistently ignored, because a right answer that scored two out of three does not feel like a loss. Across a whole paper it frequently is ten marks, and it is ten marks the child has already earned and then failed to collect.

Look hardest at the three-out-of-five answers

Parents look at the zeros, because zeros are conspicuous. The more useful questions are the ones that got partial credit. A zero usually tells you something you already suspected. A three out of five tells you that the child knew the material, started correctly, and then lost two marks to something specific and repeatable.

Find what the examiner did award and what they did not. Often the same missing element appears in four different answers, and it is one instruction away from being fixed.

Then redo the paper, not the chapter

A week later, give the same paper again, cold, with the script put away. Not a similar paper: the same one. If a question that failed the first time fails again, it is genuinely a knowledge gap and belongs on the tutor's list. If it comes out comfortably, the original loss was almost certainly pacing or nerves, which is a different problem with a different remedy.

This takes an hour and it removes an enormous amount of guessing. Most families skip it because it feels like going backwards.

Getting hold of the script in the first place

Many schools show scripts briefly and take them back. If that is the case, photograph every page while it is in front of you. Do it in decent light, with the question paper as well as the answer sheet, because half of the analysis above depends on being able to read what was actually asked. A script you were shown for ten minutes and did not photograph is a script you cannot use.

Gurgaon: build the review into a session

Going through a script properly takes forty minutes and it needs someone who can read the marking, not just the marks. In Gurgaon, where sectors are spread out and adding an extra weekday visit means adding travel to a tutor's evening, the practical answer is usually to give up part of a scheduled session to it rather than to arrange a new one. It is a better use of that hour than a new chapter. Where a session cannot be spared, the photographed script can be reviewed over a short online call, which we run alongside home tuition across Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon.

The thing most parents get wrong here. Opening the conversation with the total. The number is the least actionable part of the document and it is the part most likely to end the discussion before it starts. Begin with a single question the child got partly right, and work outwards from there.

Questions parents ask

Should we apply for re-evaluation if the marking looks harsh?

Occasionally, if a whole question was clearly left unmarked. As a rule, the time is better spent on what the script shows, and a harshly marked paper is still an accurate map of the weaknesses.

My child does not want to look at it.

Understandable, and worth waiting a day or two. Then do it with them rather than to them, and start with the partial-credit questions, which are a much less painful entry point than the zeros.

Is this worth doing for a small unit test?

Yes, and it is easier, because there is less to go through. A twenty-mark test analysed properly in October is worth more than a pre-board analysed in January.

Should the tutor do this or should we?

Both, differently. You can sort the losses into the four buckets in twenty minutes at the dining table. Reading what the examiner rewarded inside a particular answer needs somebody who knows the marking scheme.

What if the school does not return scripts at all?

Ask to see it; most schools will allow a viewing even when they do not send it home. Failing that, sit with the child and the question paper and reconstruct what they wrote. It is less accurate and still useful.

How many marks are usually recoverable from presentation alone?

It varies by subject and student, so no honest number can be given in advance. What can be said is that it is very often the largest single bucket in a script belonging to a child who is thought to be careless, and it is the fastest one to act on.
