The chapter lists overlap heavily. What differs is what the paper expects the student to produce, and that is where an unprepared child loses marks.

In Class 12 physics and chemistry, ISC and CBSE cover much the same ground. The real differences are in answer style, in how much of the working the paper expects to see, and in how seriously the practical component is treated. A tutor who knows only one board can teach the content of the other, but will not mark it correctly until they have read the right scheme.

Start with what is the same
Parents often arrive expecting two different subjects. In practice a Class 12 physics student on either board studies electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, induction, optics and modern physics; a chemistry student on either board works through solutions, electrochemistry, kinetics, the transition elements, coordination compounds and the organic sequence. The overlap is large enough that a competent subject teacher is not out of their depth on the other board’s content.
That matters for hiring, because it means the question to ask a tutor is not whether they have taught your board. It is whether they have marked your board’s answers recently, which is a different and more useful question.
Where the two genuinely diverge
- How much writing an answer wants. In the ISC papers we work through, derivations and reasoned explanations are expected to be written out at length. A student trained on short answers writes too little and is marked down for work they could actually do.
- Question formats. Recent CBSE papers use formats such as assertion and reason, case-based passages and multiple-choice items. A student who has only practised long answers can lose easy marks by over-writing and running short of time.
- The practical component. In the ISC scheme the practical work and the record kept through the year carry real weight, so the file is not a formality to be assembled the week before. Students moving from a school where it was treated casually are usually surprised.
- Organic chemistry in particular. ISC questions tend to ask for conversions and mechanisms written out in more detail, which rewards the student who has practised writing them rather than recognising them.
These are observations from teaching, not quotations from a rulebook. Weightings and formats are revised from time to time, so the current syllabus document and your own school’s scheme are the authority, and any tutor who tells you otherwise without checking is guessing.
What it means when a child moves boards
Families switching between boards at Class 11 usually brace for a content gap and find something else. The content catches up quickly. The habit does not. A student moving to ISC has to learn to write more and to show every step of a derivation. A student moving to CBSE has to learn to answer briefly and to handle the shorter question formats without over-explaining.
That is a matter of weeks of rewriting answers, not months of re-teaching chapters. It is also the part that tuition most often gets wrong, because re-teaching feels like work and rewriting feels like correction. The correction is the work.
The thing most parents get wrong here. Asking a tutor whether they teach ISC tells you almost nothing, because everyone says yes. Ask them to mark one page of your child’s last answer sheet in front of you, and to say what the scheme would and would not award. Board knowledge shows up in marking, not in explaining.
Finding the right tutor in Delhi
We teach at home across Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon, and online anywhere. Delhi has schools on both boards spread right across the city, which means the tutor who suits your child on paper may be a long way from your house, and a long journey is what quietly breaks a slot in January. Where board-specific marking experience matters more than proximity, a live online slot with the right tutor is the better trade.
Questions parents ask
Is ISC harder than CBSE for science?
Not harder in content. It generally asks for more to be written and more to be shown. Whether that is harder depends on the child.
Can one tutor handle both boards?
For the content, yes, routinely. For marking, only if they have worked with both schemes recently. Ask how they will keep the two standards apart.
We are switching boards in Class 11. How much catching up is needed?
Less content work than parents fear and more answer-writing work than they expect. Plan for a few weeks of rewriting answers to the new standard.
Is the practical file really treated differently?
In the ISC scheme the practical work carries genuine weight and is built up through the year. Confirm the details with the school rather than relying on what another family says.
