Starting Home Tuition in Class 4: Too Early, or Exactly Right?

Half the Class 4 parents who call us do not need a tutor yet. Here is how to tell which half you are in.

For most Class 4 children the honest answer is not yet. Tuition at this age is worth starting when there is a specific, repeating gap that a month of ordinary home practice has not shifted, or when nobody at home has the time or the subject knowledge to sit with the child. Starting because other children have tutors is the wrong reason and tends to cost more than money.

Four reasons that genuinely justify starting now

  • A named, repeating error. Not "weak in maths" but "cannot subtract when there is a zero in the middle", or "adds the tops and bottoms of fractions". A specific gap is fixable in weeks, and it is the best possible thing to hand a tutor in the first session.
  • The child has stopped trying. Avoiding homework, calling themselves bad at a subject, or getting upset before a test. That is worth taking seriously at nine, because the belief hardens and outlasts the gap that caused it.
  • Nobody at home can sit with them. This is a completely legitimate reason and nobody should apologise for it. If both parents work late, a tutor doing what a parent would otherwise do is a sensible purchase.
  • The school has raised it. If the class teacher has mentioned something twice, act. Teachers see thirty children a day and a comparison you cannot make from home.

Two reasons that are not good enough

The first is the class average. In many schools most of the class has some kind of tuition by Class 4, and that tells you about the culture, not about your child. A child who is keeping up does not need a second school day.

The second is a single bad test. Class 4 marks swing for reasons that have nothing to do with learning: a difficult week, a cold, an unclear question. Wait for a pattern over a term.

The thing most parents get wrong here. They buy tuition to fix a problem that is not academic. Restlessness, difficulty seeing the board, tiredness from a long school day, or genuine boredom in a child who is ahead all look like weak performance. None improves with more teaching, and two of them get worse.

What to try before you hire anyone

Spend twenty minutes a day for two weeks sitting beside them while they work. Do not teach; watch. You are looking for where they slow down, where they guess, and where they look at you instead of the page. Most parents find the answer in the first week, and it is usually narrower than they feared.

Speak to the class teacher and ask one precise question: where in the subject does my child slow down compared with the class? Teachers will answer that question well. "Is my child alright?" gets you a polite answer that helps nobody.

If you do start: what it should look like

Two sessions a week, forty-five minutes each, one or two subjects, with a review after six weeks. Not daily. Not ninety minutes. A Class 4 child who has been in school since morning has limited good attention left, and buying more of their tired hours is a poor trade.

Ask the tutor for a diagnosis in the first session rather than a start on the current chapter, and ask what they found. A tutor who cannot tell you, after two sessions, exactly which idea is missing has not looked. Then agree what should be different in six weeks, in concrete terms: the child can subtract across a zero, or can read a word problem and say what it is asking. Vague goals produce vague tuition that runs for years.

Slots and travel in Noida

We provide one-to-one home tuition across Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon, and live online tuition anywhere. Noida's sectors cover a wide area, and a tutor who has to cross several of them between sessions will eventually start arriving late or cancelling. It is better to pick a slightly less convenient time with a nearby tutor than a perfect time with a distant one. Primary school hours end earlier than senior ones, so afternoon slots are genuinely available for Class 4 and are usually the better choice.

Questions parents ask

Everyone in my child's class has a tutor. Are we falling behind?

Not by itself. Check the work rather than the trend: can the child do the last month's chapters without help? If yes, you are fine.

One tutor for maths and English, or two specialists?

One, at this age. The subjects are close together, the skills overlap, and one person sees the whole child. Specialists start to matter around Class 9.

How will I know it is working?

The child needs less help with homework, not more. If after two months they still cannot start anything alone, the tuition is doing the work instead of teaching it.

Is online tuition sensible for a Class 4 child?

It can work for short focused sessions if a parent is within earshot and the page is visible to the tutor. Home tuition is usually easier below Class 6.
