A free demo is the only evidence you have before you commit a term to someone, and most parents read it for the wrong things.

A demo class reliably tells you two things: whether the tutor can find your child's actual gap, and whether your child will admit confusion in front of them. It cannot tell you whether that person will still be prepared and punctual in December. Judge diagnosis and rapport now. Reliability can only be judged over the first month.

A demo is a working session, not a sample lecture
The weakest demos are the impressive ones. A tutor arrives, picks a topic they teach beautifully, delivers forty minutes of it, and leaves. The child nods. The parent is reassured. Nothing has been learnt about this particular child, because the tutor never asked anything.
A demo that is worth an hour looks different. The tutor asks what the school is doing this week, looks at something the child has already written, asks the child to attempt a question, and watches where it breaks. Only then do they teach. At the end they say, in plain words, what they think the problem is and what they would do about it over the next month.
That last sentence is the one to listen for. A tutor who cannot say what they would work on has not diagnosed anything.
Five things to watch, in order
- Do they ask before they teach? The first ten minutes should be questions and your child's own attempt, not explanation.
- Do they teach at your child's level, or their own? A Class 9 student being told how something works in Class 12 is a tutor enjoying themselves.
- Does your child speak? Count it if you can hear the session from the next room. A child who says nothing for forty minutes has not been taught; they have been spoken to.
- Do they say "I will check that" about anything? A tutor who has an instant confident answer to every question, including the awkward ones about the marking scheme, is a tutor who guesses.
- Do they end with something concrete? A topic, an order, a rough number of weeks. Not "we will see how it goes".
What the tutor should be asking you
The demo runs in both directions, and the questions a tutor asks are as revealing as the teaching. Expect to be asked where the school has actually reached, what the last test was on, what has already been tried, and what you want to be different by a stated point in the year. A tutor who asks none of that and simply proposes a start date has decided to teach their usual course to your child.
Expect one more question, and be slightly suspicious if it does not come: how much time can the child realistically give outside the sessions? A tutor who never asks it is planning a session that stands alone, and sessions that stand alone do not move marks.
What a demo genuinely cannot show you
Almost everything that decides whether tuition works over a year is invisible in one hour. Whether the tutor prepares before arriving or opens the book at your table. Whether they turn up in the week before a school exam when traffic is bad and they have five other students. Whether they mark what they set. Whether they follow your school's pace or their own comfortable route through the syllabus.
None of that is knowable on day one, so do not pretend it is. Judge the demo on diagnosis and rapport, then treat the first four sessions as the real trial and keep the option of stopping open.
The thing most parents get wrong here. They choose the tutor the child found easiest. Easy very often means the tutor held the pen, did the steps aloud and let the child agree. Watch who is actually working. A demo where your child struggled a little, out loud, and got somewhere by the end is a better demo than one where everything flowed.
Setting the demo up so it tells you something
Choose a topic the child is already weak in, not a fresh chapter. Fresh chapters flatter everyone. Have the last marked paper on the table before the tutor sits down, and let them see the marks and the red ink, not just the total. Keep the demo to the length a normal session would be, because a ninety-minute demo followed by forty-five minute sessions tells you nothing about the real thing.
If you can, leave the room for part of it. Children answer differently when a parent is listening, and so do tutors.
Questions parents ask
Should I sit through the whole demo?
Sit for the first few minutes so everyone is comfortable, then step out. Stay in the house and within earshot. You will learn more from the sound of the session than from watching it, and your child will speak more freely.
Is one demo enough to decide?
It is enough to rule someone out, which is most of its value. It is not enough to be confident. Decide on the demo, then review honestly after four sessions.
Should my child be told it is a trial?
Yes, plainly and without drama. A child who thinks the decision is already made behaves like a student. A child who knows they are being asked their opinion will actually give you one afterwards, which is useful.
Can we take demos from two tutors for the same topic?
Yes, and it is a fair way to compare. Give both the same weak topic and the same paper. Do not schedule them on the same evening, and do not tell your child to compare them during the session.
My child said the demo was good but could not say why. Does that count?
Partly. Comfort is real and it matters, particularly for a child who has stopped asking questions in school. But ask one more thing that evening: what did you actually do today? A vague answer to that is a warning.
Does a free demo mean the tutor is inexperienced?
No. A demo class is standard practice for home tuition and an experienced tutor usually wants one too, because taking on a student they cannot help wastes their term as much as yours.
