Online tuition is not a weaker version of home tuition. It is the same teaching with four specific things removed, and each has to be replaced deliberately.

A screen carries explanation almost perfectly. What it does not carry is peripheral supervision, anything physical, the discipline a person in the room creates, and the attention of a young child. A tutor who knows this compensates for each one on purpose. A tutor who does not simply talks for an hour.

One: the tutor's side vision
Sitting beside a student, a tutor picks up a great deal without looking for it. The pause before the second line. The rubbing out. The glance towards the formula page. The pen that stops while the eyes keep moving, which means the student is reading the question again and has not understood it either time. None of that reaches a rectangle on a screen.
The compensation is to make the invisible audible. A good online tutor asks the student to work out loud and stops them when the commentary goes quiet. They ask to see the page at fixed points, not only when an answer comes out wrong, because the point of looking is to catch the method while it is still forming. If the only time your child's notebook is inspected online is after a mistake, the tutor has accepted the loss instead of covering it.
Two: anything you have to hold
Practicals do not survive the transfer, and it is worth saying so plainly. A burette, a slide under a microscope, the feel of a pipette filling, a ray box on graph paper, the moment a titration turns colour and stays turned: none of this is taught over a call. What can be done online is the theory around the experiment, the observation table, the calculation, the sources of error, the record file and the viva preparation. That is genuinely useful and it is most of the written marks.
What it is not is learning to do the experiment. For Class 11 and 12 science, the handling has to happen in the school laboratory, and a tutor should be telling you that rather than implying the gap does not exist.
Three: the discipline of a person in the room
A tutor sitting at the table is a presence, and presence does work that nobody credits. It is hard to drift for ten minutes with an adult two feet away. On a screen, a child can look entirely attentive while attending to nothing in particular, and the tutor has no way of knowing until a test reveals it a fortnight later.
This is the loss that most often produces the complaint "the classes are going well but the marks have not moved". It is replaced by making the work visible between sessions: a set task, written on paper, photographed and sent before the next class, with the next class opening on it. Not as a formality, but as the first ten minutes.
Four: the attention of a small child
Below roughly Class 5, a screen and a short attention span are a poor combination, and what usually happens is that a parent ends up sitting in as the enforcer, which is neither what you paid for nor sustainable. There are exceptions, generally children who are already comfortable reading and writing independently. As a default, home tuition is the better arrangement for the youngest students, and online is better kept for older ones.
What online genuinely gains
- Slots survive. Nobody is stuck in traffic, so a seven o'clock session starts at seven, in a way that is not always true of a tutor travelling across a city in the evening.
- Short sessions become possible. A twenty-minute doubt session the night before a test is not worth anyone's travel, but is perfectly practical online.
- Illness does not cost a week. A child who is unwell but able to sit up can still work.
- A wider choice of tutor. For a narrow requirement, this is the real argument, and it is a strong one.
Where this leaves a family in Dwarka
Dwarka is compact. Its sectors sit close together, so a tutor can often reach a home without losing an hour to travel, and can sometimes hold two sessions in one evening a few minutes apart. Where that is true, home tuition is usually the sensible default and online is the supplement: the extra revision session, the week of a family trip, the evening a tutor is unwell but well enough to teach.
The calculation is different where travel is genuinely expensive in time, and the honest answer is that both arrangements work when they are run properly. What decides it is not the medium. It is whether the child is writing and whether somebody is reading what they wrote.
The thing most parents get wrong here. They judge online tuition by the quality of the explanation, because that is the part they can overhear. Explanation travels over a screen almost without loss. Supervision does not, and supervision is what most students are actually short of.
Questions parents ask
Is online tuition worse than home tuition?
Not inherently, for a Class 9 to 12 student who already works independently. It is worse when nobody replaces the supervision the room used to provide, which is most of the time, which is why the reputation exists.
Can chemistry or biology practicals be taught online?
The record, the calculations, the error analysis and the viva can be. The handling of apparatus cannot. Any tutor who tells you otherwise is selling something.
My child says they understand everything in the online class. Is that a good sign?
On its own, no. Understanding an explanation as it is delivered is easy and feels like learning. Ask instead what they produced on paper during the hour, and what they produced without help afterwards.
Would a mix of home and online work?
Often it is the best arrangement: the main weekly sessions at home, short revision or doubt sessions online. It also means the online setup is already tested when you need it.
Is online cheaper?
Usually somewhat, because the tutor is not spending an hour travelling. Do not treat a large discount as a bargain; it generally means fewer years of experience, not a saving on petrol.
My Class 3 child's school runs online classes, so why not tuition?
A school class is a broadcast that a child may drift through. One-to-one tuition depends on sustained back-and-forth, which is exactly what is hardest for a young child on a screen. For Classes 1 to 5, we would normally suggest home tuition.
