If a wire of 440 metres length is moulded in the form of a circle and a square turn by turn, find the ratio of the area of the circle to that of the square.

Let the radius of the circle be $r$ metres and the side of the square be $a$ metres. $$\begin{aligned} & \text { Then, } 2 \pi r=440 \Rightarrow r=\left(\frac{440 \times 7}{2 \times 22}\right)=70 \mathrm{m} . \text { And, } 4 a=440 \Rightarrow a=\left(\frac{440}{4}\right)=110 \mathrm{m} . \\ & \therefore \text { Required ratio }=\pi r^{2}: a^{2}=\left(\frac{22}{7} \times 70 \times 70\right):(110)^{2}=15400: 12100=14: 11 . \end{aligned}$$
