ABC26IN0060 · Chemical Bonding

Subject: Inorganic Chemistry · Chapter: Chemical Bonding · Topic: Chemical Bonding – General · Exam: CSIR-NET JUNE 2013 · Marks: 2 · Difficulty: Easy

Among the compounds A-D, those which hydrolyse easily are
(a)$\mathrm{NCl_3}$
(b)$\mathrm{NF_3}$
(c)$\mathrm{BiCl_3}$
(d)$\mathrm{PCl}_{3}$
Answer
Answer (as printed): D
Explanation
Among given compounds $\mathrm{NF_3}$ is not hydrolyse easily because, the more electro negative F atom strongly attracts the electrons present in N atom and they are no longer available to get hydrolysed. $\mathrm{BiCl_3}$ is not readily hydrolysed by water to give $\mathrm{BiOCl}$.
\[ \mathrm{BiCl_3 + H_2O \rightarrow BiOCl + 2HCl} \]
But BiOCl redissolve in conc. HCl to produce $\mathrm{BiCl_3}$ after evaporation. It has quasi molecular structure. $\mathrm{PCl_3}$ is easily hydrolysed by water.
