Concentration Calculator

Work out the molarity of a solution from the mass of solute, its molar mass and the volume of solution. Type a formula such as NaOH instead of a molar mass and the calculator finds it for you.

What it asks for

The formula

M = n / Vsolution(L)   and   n = mass(g) / molar mass(g mol⁻¹)

Combined:   M = mass(g) ÷ [molar mass(g mol⁻¹) × V(L)]

From the article Molarity Formula Explained: Definition, Units and Solved Examples.

Worked example

5.85 g of NaCl is dissolved and made up to 500 mL of solution. Find the molarity.

Molar mass of NaCl = 22.990 + 35.45 = 58.44 g mol⁻¹
n = 5.85 ÷ 58.44 = 0.1001 mol
V = 500 mL = 0.500 L
M = 0.1001 ÷ 0.500 = 0.200 mol L⁻¹ (0.200 M)

About this tool

This is one of the tools in the Chemistry Calculator Suite, a free calculator built for IIT-JAM, CSIR-NET, GATE and CUET (Chemical Science) preparation. Nothing is behind a login and no result is stored on a server — the arithmetic runs in your own browser.

The Concentration calculator above is the live tool — type your values and press its button; the answer appears in the same box. The link under it opens the full suite with this tool already selected, next to the others.
