How it converts

Result = value × (factor of the unit you convert from) ÷ (factor of the unit you convert to), every factor being the size of the unit in m²:
1 cm² = 1 × 10^-4 m²
1 km² = 1 × 10⁶ m²
1 ft² = 0.0929 m²
1 inch² = 6.4516 × 10^-4 m²
1 acre = 4046.86 m²
1 hectare = 10000 m²

Worked example

1 acre = 1 × 4046.86 ÷ 1 = 4046.86 m².

Common mistakes

Using the length factor for an area. 1 m = 100 cm, but 1 m² = 100² = 10,000 cm².
Thinking a hectare is about two acres. 1 hectare = 10,000 ÷ 4046.86 = 2.47105 acres.
Reading km² as 1000 m². 1 km² = 1000² = 1,000,000 m², which is 100 hectares.
