When to Start Competitive-Exam Preparation Alongside Boards

Every family asks this question and gets two loud answers. One says start in Class 8 or you have already lost. The other says finish boards first and think about entrances later. Both are selling something.

The honest answer comes out of arithmetic, not opinion. Preparation is hours spent on the right work, and hours are countable. This article counts them, shows what starting early genuinely buys, and says plainly what it does not buy.

The idea this rests on

Board syllabus and entrance syllabus overlap heavily in Class 11 and 12. Starting competitive preparation early does not mean adding a second syllabus โ€” it means studying the same syllabus to a harder standard, from the first day it is taught.

That single sentence resolves most of the argument. The student who "starts early" and the student who "does boards first" are usually studying the same chapters. The difference is the depth of the questions attempted while the chapter is fresh, and the number of times it is revisited before the exam.

What the hours actually look like

Take a realistic study budget of about 22 hours a week โ€” the number a normal school and coaching week leaves after sleep, travel, meals and rest. Now count the weeks.

Starting at the beginning of Class 11 (two years available)

Two years โ‰ˆ 104 weeks. Remove about 12 weeks for exams, holidays, illness and the weeks that simply collapse: 92 usable weeks.
92 weeks ร— 22 h = 2,024 hours of study.
If about 80% goes to the three science subjects: 2,024 ร— 0.8 = 1,619 h, and 1,619 รท 3 = โ‰ˆ 540 hours per subject.

Starting at the beginning of Class 12 (one year available)

One year โ‰ˆ 52 weeks, minus about 6 lost weeks: 46 usable weeks.
46 ร— 22 = 1,012 hours; 1,012 ร— 0.8 = 810 h; 810 รท 3 = โ‰ˆ 270 hours per subject.

Exactly half. That is the entire real cost of starting a year late โ€” not a mystery, not a disaster, just half the hours per subject. And it is recoverable only two ways: by raising the weekly hours, which has a hard ceiling, or by wasting fewer of them.

Run this with your own numbers before believing anyone's advice, including this article's. If your realistic budget is 15 hours a week rather than 22, every conclusion below shifts, and it should.

A defensible answer, stage by stage

Chemistry is the subject where an early start pays most quietly

Physics and maths reward problem practice, which is visible work. Chemistry rewards something less visible: repeated exposure. Organic reactions, inorganic trends and reagent behaviour are learnt by meeting them many times over a long period, not by an intense month. A student who has seen the reactions of alcohols four times over eighteen months will outperform a student who saw them four times in one week โ€” same number of exposures, very different retention.

This is why chemistry is the subject where "start with Class 11 and stay steady" beats both "start in Class 9" and "cram in Class 12". The gain comes from spacing, and spacing needs time that only an on-schedule start provides.

Signals that you are ready to add entrance-level work

  1. You are finishing school homework without it eating every evening.
  2. You can do the textbook's own exercise questions unaided, not just the solved examples.
  3. Your same-day review habit exists โ€” you revisit a class on the day you attend it.
  4. You are sleeping normally. Adding load to a student already short of sleep subtracts output rather than adding it.

If two or more of these are false, fix them before adding a coaching batch. Adding hours to a broken week produces a busier broken week.

What goes wrong

  • Starting in Class 8 or 9 with Class 11 material. The maths maturity is not there yet, so the topics are memorised rather than understood โ€” and then have to be unlearned. The years are spent; the advantage is not gained.
  • Treating boards and entrances as two separate syllabi. Two sets of notes, two sets of problems and two revisions for one chapter is the largest single waste of hours available to a school student.
  • Dropping school work "because entrances matter more". Board marks, attendance, practicals and internal assessment are real, and many admission routes still use them. Check the current official information bulletin of the exam you are targeting for what it actually requires, rather than acting on what a senior told you.
  • Judging the start by enrolment rather than by work. Joining a batch is not starting preparation. The date preparation starts is the date you first solved entrance-level questions yourself.
  • Believing a fixed "hours per day" number from the internet. Your commute, your school hours and your health are not the same as anyone else's. Count your own week, as above.
  • Starting three subjects at entrance level at once, mid-year, with no plan for the backlog already present. The backlog does not pause while you sprint.

The short version

Begin on the first day of Class 11, study the school syllabus to a harder standard rather than adding a parallel one, and protect the revision cycles that time buys you. Before Class 11, build the base. After Class 11 has already passed, start now and plan around 270 hours per subject rather than pretending otherwise โ€” an honest smaller plan beats an ambitious plan that collapses in November.
