About the structure

  • Rock-salt structure, but the small polarisable Ag⁺ readily leaves its octahedral site for an empty tetrahedral hole, leaving a vacancy behind: a Frenkel defect (the Defects control shows one).
  • Coordination: Ag 6, Cl 6.
  • These interstitial Ag⁺ ions carry the ionic conductivity and start the photographic latent image.
