CSIR-HRDG is the CSIR wing responsible for fellowship and human-resource-development schemes, best known for the Joint CSIR-UGC-NET examination, held twice a year in Chemical, Earth/Atmospheric/Ocean/Planetary, Life, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. A qualifying NET score makes a postgraduate science candidate eligible for a Junior Research Fellowship (leading to a CSIR-funded PhD) and/or for Assistant Professor/Lectureship eligibility in Indian universities and colleges. The exam itself is conducted by the National Testing Agency; HRDG administers the fellowship award and its terms.

CSIR-HRDG recruits mainly through a written competitive examination. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group contractual.
