CSIR is India's largest chain of publicly funded R&D institutions, running 37 constituent national laboratories across engineering, chemical, biological, environmental and earth sciences, plus their field/extension centres. CSIR headquarters itself mainly recruits Director-level and senior administrative posts and coordinates policy; day-to-day Scientist, Technical Officer, Technical Assistant and Project Associate recruitment is run independently by each constituent laboratory, each publishing its own notifications and using its own online application portal. Entry to Scientist posts across the CSIR system commonly uses GATE or CSIR/UGC-NET qualifying scores followed by an interview.
