The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India's central agency for recruiting officers into the country's premier civil, defence, engineering, medical, forest and economic/statistical services on behalf of the Government of India. It conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) for IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS and other Group A/B services, along with the Indian Forest Service Examination, Engineering Services Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination, National Defence Academy & Naval Academy Examination, CAPF Assistant Commandant Examination, Combined Medical Services Examination, Indian Economic/Statistical Service Examination and the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination. It also recruits EPFO Enforcement/Accounts Officers, conducts Section Officer/Stenographer Limited Departmental Competitive Examinations for serving staff, and processes direct-recruitment advertisements from central ministries and departments through its Online Recruitment Application (ORA) portal. Most examinations run once a year; NDA/NA and CDS are held twice a year. Applications are submitted online at upsconline.nic.in.

UPSC recruits mainly through a written competitive examination, or a written examination followed by an interview, or direct recruitment, without a competitive exam. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group A/B.
