The algebra that breaks calculus students is a short and specific list: factorisation, indices and surds, algebraic fractions, and confident bracket expansion. Each is repairable in days rather than months, and together they account for the large majority of what presents as an inability to do calculus.

The four pieces, in order of impact
Factorisation
Nearly every limit problem needs it, and a student who cannot factorise quickly cannot evaluate limits at all. This is the highest-impact item and usually the quickest to restore.
Indices and surds
Differentiating powers requires rewriting roots and reciprocals as indices without thinking. Students who cannot do that fluently stall before the calculus starts.
Algebraic fractions
Adding, simplifying and cancelling them. The quotient rule produces exactly this work, and errors here look like quotient-rule errors and are not.
Bracket expansion and sign handling
The most mundane and the most frequently responsible for a wrong final answer after correct calculus.
Restore fluency, not knowledge. These students generally know how to factorise; they cannot do it fast enough to keep it in the background while thinking about something else. The target is automaticity, which comes from short frequent drills rather than from explanation.
How to run the repair
- Ten to fifteen minutes at the start of each session, drilling one item.
- Short daily sets between sessions — five questions, timed, not twenty untimed.
- Continue the school syllabus in parallel; do not stop calculus to fix algebra.
- Re-test the item a fortnight later, because fluency decays without use.
What improvement looks like
Not immediately better calculus marks. First the student stops making errors after the calculus step, then their working speeds up, then the marks follow. A parent watching only the marks will conclude nothing is happening for two or three weeks, which is when families most often abandon this approach.
Preventing it in the first place
Algebra fluency should be maintained through Classes 9 and 10 rather than assumed to be complete. Short periodic drills cost very little and prevent the Class 11 version of this problem entirely, which is the cheapest intervention in school maths.
The reason it is so often skipped is that a Class 9 or 10 student who can factorise slowly still scores well, because those papers give them time. The fluency deficit is invisible until Class 11 removes the slack. A tutor who keeps five minutes of algebra drill in every session through those two years is buying insurance nobody notices they needed.
