One combined mark hides three different subjects, and the average is the least useful number on the report card.

Class 10 science is examined as one subject and learned as three. A student sitting at sixty per cent might be at eighty in biology and forty in physics, and the combined figure conceals exactly the information a parent needs. Splitting the mark by strand is the first and most useful diagnostic step available.

How to split the mark yourself
Take the last two science papers and total the marks gained and available for each strand separately. It takes twenty minutes and it usually produces a surprise — most students are markedly stronger in one strand and weaker in another, and families are often working on the wrong one.
ICSE makes this easier by examining the three separately from an earlier stage; under CBSE the split has to be done by hand and is worth the effort.
What each strand needs when it is the weak one
Physics weak
Almost always numerical method — formula, substitution, units, working shown. Also the standard diagrams for optics and electricity. Responds quickly to supervised practice.
Chemistry weak
Usually balanced equations and the reactions that have to be simply known. Needs short frequent recall rather than long sessions.
Biology weak
Almost always diagrams and terminology precision, not concepts. Responds to blank-page recall and strict label marking.
The three need different treatments, which is why a general instruction to "work harder at science" so rarely helps. The student does not know which strand to work on either, and defaults to the one they already like.
The board-year specifics
- Numericals carry method marks — working shown, not just answers.
- Diagrams are marked on labels, and labels are marked on spelling.
- Definitions have to be precise, not approximately right.
- The practical component is separately assessed and routinely neglected.
How much support
One session a week for a student who is broadly fine, aimed at the weak strand specifically. Two where a strand is genuinely behind and the board year is running.
What matters more than the count is that the sessions are aimed. A tutor working evenly across all three strands in a board year is spending two-thirds of the time on material the student already handles. Ask, at the end of the first month, which strand is being prioritised and why — a specific answer means the diagnosis was done.
Questions parents ask
My child says science is fine but the mark is average.
Split the mark by strand. An average total very often means one strong strand carrying one weak one.
Should we get separate tutors for the three?
Not at Class 10. One good science tutor covers all three at this level; what matters is that they diagnose by strand.
Is the practical component worth attention?
Yes, and it is the most controllable part of the subject. Ask the school for the current scheme.
ICSE has separate papers. Does this still apply?
The diagnosis is easier because the marks are already separate — but the treatments per strand are the same.
