Students prepare for the experiment and lose marks on the four other components nobody mentioned.

The practical examination is not one task. It is a set of separately assessed components — the experiment performed, the record of it, the viva, the file, and in most schemes a project or investigatory element. Students prepare almost exclusively for the first and are surprised by how much of the total sat in the others.

Prepare for all of it, not the experiment

A student who can perform a titration accurately and has a thin file, no project and no viva preparation will score moderately on a component where they could have scored highly. The experiment is the visible part and it is not the majority.

The exact division varies by board and can change between sessions, so the first practical step is simply to read the current scheme for your child’s session rather than assume last year’s split. Schools have it, and asking is straightforward.

Check the current year’s scheme rather than relying on what an older sibling did. Practical schemes are revised periodically, and preparing to an outdated split is an avoidable way to under-prepare one component.

The components in order of neglect

  • The project or investigatory work. Started late, produced hurriedly, and worth real marks. Beginning it when it is set rather than when it is due is almost free credit.
  • The file. Assembled at the end, and it shows. Written weekly, it is both better and less work.
  • The viva. Almost never prepared for, and an hour with the file covers it.
  • The observation record on the day. Rushed, unruled, calculations skipped. The same presentation discipline as the written paper applies.
  • The experiment itself. The one everyone practises.

Why this component deserves attention

Because it is the part of the subject least dependent on performing under time pressure in a three-hour written exam. For a student who finds the theory paper hard, this is where a solid score is genuinely achievable through diligence rather than ability.

It is also, unhelpfully, the part that a student under pressure deprioritises first — because it has no immediate deadline until suddenly it does.

What a tutor should do

Ask about the practical monthly. Confirm the file is current, ask when the project was set and what has been done, and spend ten minutes on the principle behind whichever experiment was performed that week. None of that takes long and it protects a substantial block of marks.

Questions parents ask

Where do we find the exact split?

The school will have the current scheme for your child’s board and session. Ask rather than assume — it does change.

Is the project marked strictly?

It is marked, and a rushed one reads as rushed. Starting early costs nothing and is visible in the result.

Can practical marks rescue a weak theory score?

They can lift the overall meaningfully, which is exactly why they matter most to the students who neglect them most.

Does a home tutor help with practicals?

With theory, calculations, the file format and viva preparation, substantially. The hands-on work belongs at school.
