A student who memorised fifty conversions can do fifty conversions. A student with a map can do the ones nobody showed them.

Organic conversions are set specifically to be unfamiliar, so memorising routes fails by design. What works is a map: knowing which functional group can be reached from which, by what class of reagent, and then finding a path. That is a smaller thing to learn than fifty chains and it covers questions the student has never seen.

Build the map, not the list

Draw the functional groups as points and the reactions as arrows between them. Alcohol to aldehyde, aldehyde to acid, acid to ester, halide to alcohol, and so on. Once that picture exists on one page, a conversion question becomes a route-finding exercise on a map the student can see.

Students who have built this themselves — actually drawn it, not been given it — find conversions stop being frightening within a couple of weeks.

Make the student draw the map from memory weekly. Being given a printed map is nearly useless; constructing it repeatedly is what makes the connections retrievable. It is the same blank-page principle that works everywhere else in chemistry.

The path-finding habit

  • Identify the starting and target functional groups, and ignore the rest of the molecule initially.
  • Find any path, even a long one. A working four-step route scores; an elegant route the student cannot recall does not.
  • Check whether the carbon count changes. If it does, the path must include a step that adds or removes carbon, which narrows the options sharply.
  • Write reagents and conditions on every arrow. These carry the marks, not the arrows themselves.

The carbon-count check is the shortcut

Most students never think about it, and it is the single most useful filter. If the product has one more carbon than the starting material, only a handful of reactions can be involved, and the route becomes almost obvious. If the count is unchanged, those reactions are excluded entirely.

Teaching that one check often halves the apparent difficulty of the whole topic.

What practice should look like

Unfamiliar conversions, attempted cold, with the map allowed at first and then withdrawn. Practising conversions the student has already seen tests memory rather than method, which is precisely the wrong thing to be training here.

How long does it take to build the map?

A few sessions to construct and a few weeks of weekly redrawing to make it reliable.

Are marks given for the route or the reagents?

Largely the reagents and conditions. A correct route with unnamed reagents scores poorly.

Does this help for entrance exams too?

More so, because entrance conversions are deliberately further from anything memorised.
