Inverse trigonometry is a short chapter that punishes carelessness more than difficulty. The arithmetic is usually right; the answer falls outside the principal value branch and the mark goes. Getting the branches written down and checked as a habit converts most of these losses back into marks without learning anything new.

The one habit that recovers the marks
Before solving anything, the student writes the principal value branch of the function in the question. It takes five seconds. Then, after reaching an answer, they check the answer lies inside it. That is the entire fix for the majority of lost marks in this chapter.
Students resist it because the branches feel like something they will remember. Under exam pressure, on a question that also involves an identity and a simplification, they do not remember.
The branches worth memorising cold
- Arcsin and arctan return values in the ranges that include negative angles; arccos does not.
- The distinction matters most when the argument is negative, which is exactly when questions are set.
- Writing the branch as an interval, not describing it in words, is what makes the check mechanical.
Negative arguments are where questions are deliberately set. A question with a positive argument rarely separates students. One with a negative argument separates those who checked the branch from those who assumed symmetry. Expect them and rehearse them.
Identities: use fewer, more reliably
There are more identities in this chapter than a student needs. Trying to hold all of them produces misapplication under pressure. A tutor is usually better off drilling a small reliable set until they are automatic, and teaching the student to derive the rest when needed.
The conversion identities between functions, and the addition formulae with their conditions, cover most of what the board asks. The conditions attached to the addition formulae are themselves a common mark loss — they are not optional decoration.
How to practise it
Short, frequent sets rather than one long session. Ten questions three times a week beats thirty in one evening, because the failure mode is a lapse of habit rather than a gap in understanding, and habits are built by repetition spaced out.
Mark strictly: an answer outside the branch scores zero even if the working is elegant. Students only take the branch check seriously once they have lost marks to it in practice rather than in the exam.

My child says this chapter is easy but marks are low.
That is the signature of this chapter exactly. It is easy and it is unforgiving, and the losses come from branch and condition errors rather than from difficulty.
How many identities do they actually need?
Fewer than most books present. A small reliable set plus the ability to derive is more robust than a long memorised list.
Is it worth much in the board paper?
A steady few marks, and they are among the most recoverable in the paper because the fix is a habit rather than new learning.
Does ISC differ here?
The content is close; ISC expects the conditions stated more explicitly. Practise writing them either way — CBSE awards for them too.
