Matrices and determinants is procedural, predictable and generous with marks. That is precisely why students underprepare it — it looks like arithmetic and gets treated as revision. The marks are lost to carelessness in long calculations and to skipped steps, not to difficulty, which makes them the cheapest marks in the paper to recover.

Why it gets underprepared
Because it is not conceptually hard, students conclude it needs no practice. Then the board asks for the inverse of a three-by-three matrix, or a system solved by the matrix method, and a single sign error twelve lines in destroys an answer that was otherwise complete.
The skill being tested is sustained accuracy across a long mechanical calculation, and that is genuinely a skill. It improves with practice and it does not improve with understanding alone.
The discipline that protects the marks
- Write every step. Method marks are awarded through a long calculation; students who compress it lose them even when the final answer is right.
- Check the determinant before inverting. A student who computes an entire adjoint before noticing the determinant is zero has spent ten minutes for nothing.
- Verify by multiplication when time allows. Multiplying the answer by the original should give the identity — a complete self-check that most students never use.
- Cofactor signs written explicitly, not applied mentally. This is where the majority of errors enter.
- Keep the layout wide. Cramped working causes transcription errors between lines more often than misunderstanding does.
Properties of determinants are the genuinely clever part. Row and column operations can turn a heavy calculation into a short one, and they are worth marks in themselves. Students who only ever expand along the first row are doing more arithmetic than necessary and giving themselves more chances to slip.
What the board reliably asks
Solving a system of three equations by the matrix method appears with high regularity, as does finding an inverse and using determinant properties to evaluate or prove something. Because the question types are so predictable, targeted practice pays here more efficiently than in almost any other chapter.
How to practise
Whole questions, timed, with the full working written out as it would be in the exam. Practising the arithmetic in isolation misses the point — the failure happens at length, under time, and only appears when the practice matches those conditions.

That is the standard pattern. It is an accuracy and stamina problem, not a comprehension one, and it responds to timed full-question practice.
Is it worth many marks?
It is one of the more predictable scoring blocks, which makes it disproportionately worth preparing properly.
Should the verification step be done in the exam?
If time allows, yes — it catches errors nothing else will. It is one of the few genuine self-checks available in the paper.
Does ISC treat it the same?
Broadly, with somewhat more emphasis on written justification. The working discipline is the same either way.
