Stoichiometry is mole-concept arithmetic applied to a balanced equation. A student who is shaky on what a mole is will experience stoichiometry as an unpredictable sequence of steps, and no amount of stoichiometry practice will fix that. The repair has to go back one chapter, and it is quicker than it sounds.

How to confirm the diagnosis in five minutes

Give the student a simple two-way conversion — grams to moles and back — with no reaction involved. If that is hesitant, the problem is not stoichiometry.

Then ask them to explain, without formulae, what the mole ratio in a balanced equation actually tells you. A student who says it is the ratio of particles reacting has understood; one who says it is the numbers in front of the formulae has memorised a procedure.

A student who can convert grams to moles fluently and still cannot do stoichiometry has a different problem — usually not balancing the equation first, or not identifying which substance the question is asking about. That is a much smaller fix and worth ruling in or out before going back a chapter.

The repair sequence

  • Mole as a count, explained once, plainly.
  • Conversions both ways, drilled until automatic — this is the bit that must be fast, not merely possible.
  • Balanced equation as a particle ratio, stated in words before any calculation.
  • Then stoichiometry, as three steps: convert to moles, apply the ratio, convert back.

Written as three steps and applied identically every time, stoichiometry stops being unpredictable. Most students who could not do it can do it within two sessions once the foundation is secure.

The three-step discipline

Every stoichiometry answer written the same way: convert, ratio, convert. Students who improvise the order get lost in longer problems, particularly those involving limiting reagent or percentage yield where two chains of conversion run in parallel.

Writing the steps also protects method marks, which are awarded for exactly this structure.

Why this matters beyond the chapter

Limiting reagent, percentage yield, solution concentration and gas volume problems are all stoichiometry with an extra step. A student secure in the three-step method handles all of them; a student improvising handles none of them reliably.

Questions parents ask

Is going back a chapter really necessary?

If the conversions are hesitant, yes — and it is usually two or three sessions rather than a long detour.

My child balances equations fine but still struggles.

Then check the conversions. Balancing and mole arithmetic are separate skills and either can be the gap.

How do we know when it is fixed?

When the student can start an unfamiliar stoichiometry problem without prompting. Following a worked example is not the same test.

Does this affect Class 12?

Substantially — electrochemistry, kinetics and solutions all rest on it.
