Students who scored 95 in Class 10 Science routinely struggle in Class 11 Physics. The reason is not that they got worse — it is that the subject changed underneath them.
Class 10 Physics rewards recognising which formula a question wants and substituting into it. Class 11 stops asking that question. It asks the student to describe a physical situation mathematically — choose axes, resolve vectors, draw the free-body diagram, decide which principle applies — and only then compute. The mark drop between Class 10 and Class 11 is almost never a drop in effort. It is the first time a student meets Physics as modelling rather than recall, and nobody warned them.

The gap is usually Maths, not Physics
This is the most useful single diagnosis in Class 11. A student who cannot resolve a vector into components, or who is uncomfortable with the trigonometry that does it, will fail at Laws of Motion for reasons that have nothing to do with Newton. The same student then concludes they are “bad at Physics” and starts revising Physics harder, which does not touch the actual problem.
Before adding Physics hours, it is worth checking the mathematics the chapter depends on: components and resolution, basic trigonometric identities, graph reading and gradients, and the idea of a rate of change. Repairing those is usually faster than re-teaching the Physics on top of them.
The three chapters where it becomes obvious
Units, dimensions and errors. Treated as an easy opening chapter and quietly the most conceptual one. It is where a student first has to think about what a physical quantity is, and dimensional analysis is a genuine tool for the rest of the year — not a formality to get past.
Motion in a plane. The first chapter that cannot be done without vectors. Students who coped with straight-line motion by memorising three equations meet a situation those equations do not directly answer, and this is typically where the marks first fall.
Laws of Motion. The free-body diagram is the whole subject in one skill. A student who draws it correctly can usually finish the problem; a student who does not draw one at all is guessing, however well they know the laws.
What to check in the notebook: look for diagrams. A Class 11 Physics solution that is a column of algebra with no diagram is a solution the student does not understand, even when the answer is right. Physics is done on the diagram; the algebra just finishes it.
What changes in how the subject has to be studied
Class 10 habits — read the chapter, learn the formulae, solve the back exercises — are not wrong, they are insufficient. Class 11 needs the student to work problems before feeling ready, because the understanding is built by the attempt rather than confirmed by it. Students who wait until they feel confident to start problems tend to never start.
It also needs derivations to be understood rather than memorised. Every year, students memorise a derivation and lose the marks anyway, because the paper asked for it from a slightly different starting point.
Board syllabus, honestly
This is Class 11 and 12 Physics for the school board — CBSE and ISC — taught one to one, at the standard the board paper actually sets. Where a student is also preparing for an entrance exam, the school Physics has to be solid first: a shaky Class 11 foundation is the most common reason entrance preparation stalls in Class 12.
