English is the subject most families assume needs no tutor, because the child already speaks it. That assumption costs marks. The board paper tests two things a student cannot memorise the night before — comprehension of a passage nobody has seen, and writing produced to a format under time pressure. Both are skills, and skills are built by practice with correction, not by reading the chapter again.

The stages, and what each demands
Classes 1 to 5
Fluent reading first, then writing in complete sentences. A child who reads haltingly will struggle in every other subject too, because every other subject is delivered in English. This is the stage where the return on tuition is highest and the least often taken.
Classes 6 to 8
Grammar becomes formal and writing becomes structured — notice, letter, paragraph, story. Most students can name a tense and still not use it correctly under exam conditions. The gap between knowing a rule and applying it is the whole job at this stage.
Classes 9 and 10
Board-facing. The unseen passage and the writing section together carry a large share of the paper and neither can be prepared by revision alone. Literature answers begin to need evidence from the text rather than a retelling of the story.
Classes 11 and 12
Longer texts, and answers that must argue rather than summarise. Students who have coped until now by writing everything they remember start losing marks for exactly that.
Where the marks actually go
Three places, repeatedly. The unseen passage, because the student answers from memory of a similar passage instead of from this one. The writing section, because the format is wrong even when the content is good. And literature, because the answer retells the chapter instead of answering the question asked. All three respond quickly to correction on the student’s own written work — which is why sessions are built around writing, not around reading aloud.
On “my child speaks English well”: spoken fluency and written accuracy are separate. A confident speaker can still lose marks on tense agreement, punctuation and paragraph structure — and because the family hears fluent speech at home, the written problem is usually noticed only when a marked paper comes back.
CBSE and ICSE do not want the same answer
ICSE expects longer, more descriptive writing and sets separate Language and Literature papers with a heavier prescribed reading list. CBSE rewards compact, well-structured answers to a tighter format. The underlying language is the same; the answer that earns full marks is not. A tutor should know which board your child sits before the first session.
My child reads a lot but still loses marks. Why?
Reading builds vocabulary and comfort, not exam technique. The passage and writing sections are marked against a format and a set of specific skills. Wide reading helps, but it does not by itself teach a student how a notice is laid out or how to support a literature answer with evidence from the text.
Can English be taught online?
Yes, and it works particularly well — the whole subject is text on a screen the tutor and student can annotate together. Written work is shared, corrected and rewritten in the session.
Do you teach spoken English or personality development?
No. This is academic English for school and board examinations. Spoken-English coaching is a different service and we do not offer it.
My child is in Class 7 with no board exam. Can this wait?
It can, but Classes 6 to 8 are where writing structure is supposed to be built, and Class 9 assumes it already is. Waiting usually means repairing habits later rather than forming them now.
