In plain words
The National Service Scheme (NSS), run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports since 1969, is a student community-service volunteer programme with over 39,000 units and several million active volunteers. It is a volunteer programme, not paid employment - first-year undergraduates are selected by their college's NSS Programme Officer at the start of each academic year, with details available on the scheme's own website.
NSS recruits mainly through direct recruitment, without a competitive exam. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group apprentice.
