Students postpone chemistry chapters that are recall-heavy rather than reasoning-heavy, because those feel like something that can be crammed later. Inorganic chemistry is the usual casualty, along with biomolecules and the later organic chapters. The problem is that recall-heavy material needs spacing to stick, so the one strategy that cannot work on it is the one students choose.

The logic students are using
It is not laziness and it is worth understanding. A student reasons that physical chemistry needs practice over time, organic mechanisms need building up, but inorganic is "just facts" — so it can be absorbed in a fortnight before the exam. Every part of that reasoning is correct except the last clause.
Facts absorbed in a fortnight decay in a fortnight. Recall-heavy material is precisely the kind that requires spaced exposure, which means it needs to start early even though it feels like the thing that could start late.
What it costs by March
- A block of the paper the student can attempt only partially, in a subject they otherwise know.
- Revision time in the final weeks consumed by first-time learning, when it should be consolidating.
- Confidence damage from a pre-board result that reflects the postponement rather than the ability.
- Knock-on losses in the other strands, because the panic-cramming displaces their revision too.
The pre-board is usually when this surfaces, which is late enough to hurt and early enough to fix. A student who discovers an inorganic hole in the pre-board still has a few weeks, but those weeks now have to do two jobs.
The fix, which is small
Fifteen minutes of inorganic retrieval, three times a week, from the beginning of the year. Not reading — writing from a blank page and checking. It is a small enough commitment that it survives a busy term, and spaced across months it does what a fortnight of cramming cannot.
The same applies to biomolecules and the named-reaction lists in organic. Little and often, from early, on precisely the material that feels like it can wait.
How a tutor should handle it
By testing the postponed material regularly and unannounced, from early in the year. A tutor who follows the school’s order exactly will reach inorganic when the school does, which is late, and will have no time to space it.
A short retrieval check at the start of each session, on something taught weeks earlier, costs five minutes and changes what survives to March.
Questions parents ask
Is inorganic really that hard to cram?
It is easy to cram and hard to retain. The distinction is what catches students out — the fortnight feels successful right up to the exam.
My child insists they will do it later.
A reasonable compromise is little-and-often now rather than a full study block. Fifteen minutes three times a week is hard to argue against and does most of the work.
Which chapters specifically?
It varies by student, but inorganic as a whole, biomolecules, polymers and the later named reactions are the usual candidates. Ask the tutor which ones your child is avoiding — they will know.
What if it is already January?
Then be selective. Target the highest-weight portions and accept that some will not be covered — that is a better outcome than thin coverage of everything.
