Moving between CBSE, ICSE and ISC changes less chemistry than families expect and more chemistry writing than they anticipate. The concepts largely transfer; the expected answer format, the depth of written reasoning and the practical scheme do not. A student who is not explicitly retrained on the new board’s expectations will know the chemistry and lose the marks.

What actually differs
Answer length and reasoning
CBSE rewards compact, precise answers that hit the marking points. ICSE and ISC expect the reasoning to be visible on the page. A student writing CBSE-length answers on an ISC paper loses marks steadily while believing they answered correctly.
Practical weighting and scheme
The structure and weighting of the practical component differ, and the records the student has been keeping may not match what the new board expects.
Topic emphasis
Some topics are treated at greater depth on one board than the other. The gap is usually a handful of topics rather than a term of content.
The first month after a board switch should be spent mostly on answer format, not on content. Families instinctively worry about the syllabus and the syllabus is largely fine. It is the writing that costs marks, and it is invisible until a marked paper comes back.
Timing matters more than anything
A switch in Classes 6 to 9 is genuinely manageable — there is time to absorb the new expectations before anything is at stake. A switch into Class 10 or Class 12 is difficult, because the student is learning a new answer style during a board year.
Where the timing is a choice, moving at the start of Class 9 or Class 11 is considerably easier than mid-cycle.
What a tutor must be told
- Which board the student is moving from and to, and when.
- Which chapters were covered under the old board.
- Whether the practical records transfer.
- The new school’s expectations, from a marked paper if one exists.
And the tutor must be experienced in the new board specifically. Someone teaching CBSE style to a new ISC student compounds the exact problem you engaged them to fix.
How long it takes
Answer format adjusts within a term with strict marking. Content gaps close in a few sessions. The whole transition is usually a matter of one term rather than one year, provided it is treated as a real transition rather than assumed to sort itself out.

Is one board harder than the other?
Neither reliably. They reward different things, and students score well in whichever they have actually been trained for.
Should tuition start before the switch?
Ideally during the holiday before it. That is the cheapest time to do the answer-format work.
Can the same tutor handle both boards?
Only if they genuinely know both marking schemes. Ask directly rather than assume.
What if we switch in Class 11?
That is a reasonable point to switch — there is a full year before the board exam to adjust.
