Notes are worth making only if writing them requires thinking. Copying what the teacher wrote does not; summarising it in the student’s own words, or writing the bit that was confusing, does. The test of a notebook is not whether it is complete but whether the student would learn something from re-reading it in February.

What genuinely belongs in a chemistry notebook
- Methods, written as steps. How to approach a mole-concept problem, how to balance a redox equation. Procedures the student can follow later.
- Own-words explanations of anything confusing, written after understanding it, not during the explanation.
- Mistakes and why they were mistakes. The most valuable page in any notebook and the least common.
- Reaction conditions, which are marked and are scattered through the textbook.
- Anything the teacher said that is not in the book.
A mistakes page is worth more than the rest of the notebook. Every error made in homework or a test, with a line on what went wrong. Re-read before an exam, it is a personalised list of exactly what this student is likely to do wrong again.
What does not belong
Definitions copied verbatim from the textbook. Diagrams traced from the book. Full solutions copied from the board without attempting them first. All of these produce a full notebook and no learning, and they consume time that retrieval practice would use better.
The distinction is simple: if the writing required no thought, it taught nothing.
Notes for the three strands
Physical chemistry notes should be methods and worked examples. Organic notes should be mechanisms and the conversion map. Inorganic notes should be compact, structured, and designed for repeated blank-page recall — which usually means shorter than students expect, since the point is to test against them rather than to read them.
The February test
Ask the student to open their notebook at a chapter from four months ago and say whether it would help them now. If the answer is no, the notes were an activity rather than a resource, and the time is better spent elsewhere.
The same test applied to a tutor session is useful too. If the hour produced pages of copied working and nothing the student wrote themselves, the notebook records what happened rather than what was learned. Ask what your child actually wrote during the session, not what was covered in it.
Questions parents ask
My child has beautiful, complete notes and average marks.
Very common. Completeness is not the useful property — whether making them required thinking is.
Should notes be rewritten neatly?
Only if rewritten from memory. Copying your own notes neatly is the same activity as copying the board.
Are printed notes from a tutor useful?
As a reference, sometimes. They do not do the work that making your own notes does, and should not replace it.
How much time should notes take?
Less than most students give them. The time is better split toward attempting questions.
