They solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one is usually a diagnosis error, not a budget error.

A coaching class is built for pace and coverage across a large group; one-to-one home tuition is built for finding and closing a specific gap. If your child is broadly on track and needs structure and momentum, coaching works. If your child has an identifiable weakness that a class cannot stop for, coaching will not reach it however good the teacher is.
| Coaching suits | A student on track who needs pace, structure and peer momentum |
|---|---|
| One-to-one suits | A student with a specific gap, or one who will not ask questions in a group |
| The deciding question | Can the problem be fixed without stopping for this student? |
| Both together | Sometimes right, often just a full timetable |

What a coaching class is genuinely good at
Pace. A good class moves at a planned speed through the syllabus and does not let a student drift for a month unnoticed. It also gives a student a reference point — seeing how others answer is a real motivator and a real corrective.
And for a strong student, the group format costs nothing. If the doubt in your head is the same doubt three other people have, hearing it answered once serves everyone.
What it cannot do
Stop. A class of thirty cannot spend twenty minutes finding out that one student never settled the mole concept in Class 11. It has to move, and the student who needed it to stop falls further behind while appearing to attend everything.
This is the crux of the choice, and it is a diagnosis question rather than a preference. If your child’s problem is a specific thing they do not know, a class will not find it. If their problem is drift, a class will fix it.
The reliable signal: a student who scores reasonably in school tests but freezes on unfamiliar questions usually has a specific gap and needs one-to-one. A student who understands in the moment but has stopped keeping up usually needs the structure a class provides.
What one-to-one is genuinely good at
- Finding the actual problem. Concept, method, presentation and carelessness under time are four different faults with four different fixes, and they are only separable by watching one student work.
- Working at the student’s pace on the thing that matters rather than at the group’s pace on the syllabus.
- The student who will not ask in front of others. This is more common than parents think and it is not a small factor.
- Board-specific answer writing. CBSE and ISC reward different answers, and a mixed group is usually taught to the majority board.
When both together makes sense, and when it does not
It makes sense for a Class 12 student preparing for an entrance exam alongside boards, where the class covers entrance-level breadth and the tutor keeps the board answer writing sharp. Those are genuinely two different jobs.
It does not make sense as a way of doing more. A student attending school, coaching and tuition has no unstructured study time left, and chemistry in particular is consolidated by a student alone with past papers. Adding a third layer often lowers marks rather than raising them.
Questions parents ask
Is one-to-one always better if we can afford it?
No. A self-motivated student who is keeping up may get more from a class — pace and peers are real advantages, and a tutor cannot manufacture either.
My child is quiet and never asks doubts in class.
That alone is a strong argument for one-to-one, at least until the gaps are cleared. Unasked doubts compound quietly.
Can a home tutor cover the syllabus as fast as a coaching class?
Faster, usually, because no time is spent on material this particular student already knows. Coverage speed is rarely the reason to choose a class.
We tried coaching and marks did not move. What next?
Get the problem diagnosed before buying more hours of anything. If a class did not help, more class will not either — but that does not automatically mean the answer is more tuition.
What do fees look like?
They depend on class, frequency and mode. Call +91 92121 42427 for a figure against your requirement.
