A student changing schools mid-year rarely faces new content — the syllabus is the same. What they face is a different sequence: chapters the new school covered while the old one had not, and chapters they have already done being repeated. The gap is specific, findable in an afternoon, and easily missed because nobody is looking for it.

Do the chapter comparison immediately
Get the list of chapters completed at the old school and the list completed at the new one. The chapters on the second list and not the first are the gap, and they will be assumed knowledge from the student’s first day.
This takes an afternoon and it is routinely skipped, with the result that the student discovers the gap in a test six weeks later and everyone concludes they are struggling with the new school.
The gap is usually two or three chapters, not a term’s worth. That is genuinely manageable with a few focused sessions — but only if somebody identifies it. Left undiagnosed, the student experiences it as a general inability to keep up.
The practical file and internal assessment
Frequently overlooked and administratively awkward. Experiments performed at the old school may not match the new school’s records, and internal assessment marks may not transfer cleanly.
Raise it with the new school in the first week rather than in February. Schools generally accommodate it when asked early and have fewer options when asked late.
What else changes
- Board. If the board also changed, this is a much larger issue than the chapter gap — answer style, weighting and practical schemes all differ.
- Teaching style and expected presentation. Different schools mark differently, and a student may need to adjust how they write answers.
- Reference material. The new school may work from different books or its own notes, which the student does not have for the earlier chapters.
How a tutor should handle it
By starting with the comparison rather than the syllabus. A tutor who begins teaching the current chapter without establishing what was missed is building on an unknown foundation, and the gap will surface later at a worse time.
Three or four focused sessions on the missed chapters usually closes it entirely.

In the first fortnight. The gap is small now and grows as the new school moves on.
What if the board changed too?
Then the priority is answer style, not content. That is a bigger adjustment and worth naming explicitly to the tutor.
Will the school help identify the gap?
Usually, if asked directly for the chapters completed. It is a reasonable request and rarely refused.
Is mid-year switching a bad idea in Class 12?
It is harder, and sometimes unavoidable. Doing the chapter comparison immediately matters more in Class 12 than in any other year.
